In a bid to preserve Syria’s cultural heritage, a Byzantine church complex dating back 1,600 years has reopened to the public. The Deir Samaan Citadel, which is associated with the Church of Saint Simeon Stylites and is also known as Qalaat Semaan, is now open to the public after extensive repair work. This historic site stands in the countryside of Aleppo and is said to have been built in the 5th century AD. Here is why this old church complex holds so much significance.
Saint Simeon Church Complex History
The Saint Simeon Church complex reopened on the 28th of September this year after significant revamping. It was built to honor the life and principles of Saint Simeon the Stylite. This Christian monk was an ascetic and garnered significant renown when he started living and preaching on top of a pillar, which he kept raising.
Eventually, the pillar reached the height of 18 meters, which was quite a feat at the time. People came from far and wide just to hear him preach. It is said that he was born in 386 AD and died in 459 AD. After his death and between 476 and 490 AD, a huge church complex was built around the pillar on which he perched. The remains of this complex are now the Church of Saint Simeon Stylites.

Saint Simeon Church Complex: How Was It Damaged?
The complex has seen both natural and human-made disasters like earthquakes and military strikes. Major earthquakes between 526 AD and 528 AD significantly damaged the complex. In the May of 2016, a military strike also damaged the site quite a lot, and then, in the February of 2023, another major earthquake further damaged the complex.
This reopening of this UNESCO Heritage Site is also a part of a broader move to revive tourism in the Aleppo province of Syria.
