Vasai Fort, one of the most historic destinations in Mumbai, houses historic ruins of three churches, St. Baptist Church, St. Dominic Church, and St. Augustine Church. The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has recently announced plans to restore and preserve the remains of this ancient site. This move aligns with the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains (AMASR) Act, passed in 1958. Here are all the details you should know.

The ASI undertook this move after a Mumbai resident, Vinod Roshan D’souza, raised concerns about the condition of the structure. The ASI’s Mumbai Circle then responded to the public grievance filed through the Prime Minister’s grievance portal.

The restoration plans, among other things, include the development of visitor amenities as well as the installation of a mild steel sliding gate near the main entrance. Furthermore, ASI has also stated that a large part of the restoration work is already completed.

At sites including St. Franciscan Church, St. Gonsalo Garcia Church, and the Balle Killa area, the removal of debris, vegetation, and invasive growth from walls and stone flooring is completed. The building of stone aprons, waterproofing, and installation of roadside grill fencing have also been finished.

Installing the roadside grill is key to preventing unauthorized entry. Furthermore, the Misericordia Structure is also getting a facelift, whereby the vegetation and debris around it are being cleared.

The ASI has also communicated that the Vasai Fort is a centrally protected area under the AMASR. The fort complex itself occupies a sprawling 3,300 square meters and covers around 109 acres. It houses a number of archaeological structures, including seven churches and a citadel.
