The famous Maa Kamakhya temple in Guwahati is all geared up for its annual and most revered Ambubachi Mela celebrations. The administration is set to welcome all devotees visiting the temple over the next four days as the sacred prabhiti period begins. It marks the beginning of the annual menstrual cycle of Goddess Kamakhya. Here’s everything you must know about this.
Maa Kamakhya Temple Gears Up For Ambubachi Mela
The doors of the Maa Kamakhya temple closed at 09:08 PM on Monday, on Prabhiti. The main gates are ceremoniously closed for the next three days. It is believed that the goddess undergoes her menses; hence, all agriculture, worship, and digging in the area cease for these three days.
Although the temple is closed, the Mahayagya will be performed continuously for three days and nights. These Mahayagya will be conducted on June 24, 24 and 25 with the main ceremony taking place on June 26.
The doors of the temples will be opened after nibriti, which is on the morning of June 26, right after sunrise. The temple will be opened for the devotees only after all the ceremonial rituals associated with Kamakhya Puja, as well as the holy bath of Goddess Bhagwati, take place. These pujas are known as intense purification rituals that are performed after nibriti, which marks the end of her menstrual cycle.

Preparations For Devotees
A total of 7,46,066 devotees visited the temple in 2024, including 20 foreign nationals for the Ambubachi Mela. In 2025, about 7,72,019 devotees visited the temple, including 42 foreign nationals. Hence, about eight lakh devotees are expected to visit this powerful Shakti Peeth during the Ambubachi Mela, as per a senior official of the Kamrup Metropolitan district administration.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma extended a hearty welcome to all the devotees who have arrived in Assam for the festival from across the globe. He has asked all the devotees and stakeholders to come together to ensure the smooth, safe, and orderly conduct of this annual festival.
On June 17, Tourism Minister Ajanta Neog mentioned in a press conference that the government is ready for the heavy influx of devotees during the Ambubachi Mela. They have also set up three huge camps to accommodate the devotees, with separate camps for police personnel. The administration has also set up medical camps with medicines and doctors. During this period, no VIP or VVIPs will be allowed, said Neog.
