In a groundbreaking achievement, the iconic Shore Temple in Mamallapuram, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has ushered in a new era of sustainable heritage conservation, becoming India’s inaugural Green Energy Archaeological Site. This milestone is the result of a pioneering collaboration between the Renault Nissan Technology & Business Centre India (Renault Nissan Tech) and Hand in Hand India (HiH) known as the Green Heritage Project.
Shore Temple In Mamallapuram Is India’s First Green Energy Archaeological Site
The heart of this transformation lies in the installation of three strategically positioned solar plants, each boasting a 10-kilowatt capacity. These solar facilities harness the abundant sunlight in the region to power the illumination of the ancient temple. Notably, any surplus solar energy generated will be seamlessly integrated into the grid, serving the energy needs of the future while minimizing environmental impact.
Beyond providing green energy to light up the Shore Temple, the Green Heritage Project takes a holistic approach to enhance the visitor experience and reduce the ecological footprint of tourism in the area. Key among these efforts is the implementation of essential facilities operating on renewable energy sources. A solar-operated reverse osmosis (RO) plant has been introduced, offering clean drinking water to tourists, complemented by three water kiosks for easy access.
Empowering the local community is another vital facet of this project. Women from the area are now engaged to operate electric buggies, a sustainable mode of transportation that promotes inclusivity while reducing carbon emissions. Additionally, recognizing the growing popularity of electric vehicles (EVs), the project has set up a dedicated parking shed with three charging units, further encouraging the adoption of clean transportation.
