The highly anticipated Amarnath Yatra is just around the corner, taking place from July 3 to August 28, 2026. This sacred pilgrimage, dedicated to Lord Shiva, draws countless devotees each year, and preparations in Pahalgam are ramping up to accommodate the influx. The local Municipal Committee has stepped up efforts by increasing sanitation staff, enhancing infrastructure, and introducing new amenities to ensure a smooth experience for all visitors. And now, the Jammu & Kashmir Police have released a detailed traffic and travel advisory.

Amarnath Yatra 2026 Travel Advisory You Must Know

This guidance is important for ensuring the safety and comfort of both pilgrims and tourists as they make their journeys. One key directive is the restriction on civilian traffic through the Navyug Tunnel during certain hours. Specifically, vehicles heading from Kashmir to Jammu cannot enter the tunnel until after 11:30 AM, while those traveling the other way will be turned away if they try to enter after 3 PM.

Furthermore, strict cut-off timings are in place for various routes. For example, if you're coming from Mir Bazar to Srinagar or Anantnag, you'll need to reach your destination before 4 PM, while drivers heading for the Navyug Tunnel should arrive by 5 PM.

Where Does The Amarnath Yatra Take Place

The Amarnath Yatra starts at Pahalgam, which is approximately 48 km from the famous Amarnathji cave. This holy shrine is located in the upper reaches of the Anantnag District, at an altitude of about 13,000 ft (5,486 m) above sea level. Due to its height, the cave is often covered with snow for most of the year, making the entrance accessible only for a brief period during the summer months.

What To Know Before Registering For Amarnath Yatra

Preparing for the Amarnath Yatra is necessary for a safe and enjoyable experience. One must start getting fit by walking 4-5 km daily, ideally a month in advance. Incorporate deep breathing exercises and yoga, especially pranayam, to enhance your body’s oxygen efficiency. Stay hydrated by drinking around 5 liters of water each day to avoid dehydration and headaches. Fuel up with plenty of carbohydrates to keep your energy up. If you experience any signs of altitude sickness, seek medical help immediately, as facilities are available every 2 km. You can read more about the Yatra advisory here.

You must also know that Helicopter services for pilgrim travel will not be available in the Yatra area during the Amarnathji Yatra in 2026. All pilgrims planning to visit the Holy Shrine during this Yatra should keep this in mind. Pilgrims can reach the Holy Cave Shrine on foot or by using ponies or palkis throughout the Yatra.

Summing Up
