mumbai monorail fare hike

The Mumbai Monorail is all set for its relaunch after witnessing a nine-month-long suspension. This soon-to-happen relaunch might come with a price hike, as per the proposal by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). The proposal mentions higher ticket prices in order to counterbalance the higher maintenance costs and the cost of procuring new trains. Here’s everything you must know about this.

MMRDA Proposes Fare Hike For Mumbai Monorail

This Mumbai Monorail fare hike will be the second fare revision since its launch in 2014 if the proposal gets approved by the Maharashtra government. Under the proposal by MMRDA, the new minimum fare hike will be:

  • INR 10 from INR 5 for 3 km travel
  • INR 20 for 3 to 6 km
  • INR 30 for 6 to 9 km
  • INR 40 for 9 to 12 km
  • INR 50 for 12 to 15 km
  • INR 60 for 15 to 18 km
  • INR 70 for 18 km and more

The revised fare structure for Monorail might fall in line with Mumbai Metro fares, as it also charges INR 10 for the first 3 km.

The officials mentioned that the fare revision is necessitated by various factors. This includes the procurement of new trains from Medha Servo Drives based in Hyderabad, along with the mounting cost of operation and maintenance.

This fare structure was revised in the year 2018. They were revised to:

  • INR 10 for the first 3 km
  • INR 20 for 3 to 12 km
  • INR 30 for 12 to 18 km
  • INR 40 for over 18 km

The monorail services were halted in 2025 in the month of September. The reason behind it was the repeated technical failures, which actually put the lives of passengers at risk. Since then, the network has undergone a huge upgrade. This upgrade included track repairs, fleet upgrade, and modern Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC).
