On September 20, 2025, the services of Mumbai’s only monorail system were suspended. This decision was taken after many incidents of technical glitches surfaced, which endangered the lives of commuters. Safety Trials, Inspections To Commence This Week
Following a series of technical glitches, the Mumbai Monorail was shut down as it posed a danger to commuters’ lives. The monorail system faced derailments, chronic technical breakdowns, and power failures repeatedly. According to officials, it is expected to resume operations sometime in the month of June, 2026.
The final safety trials and inspections of the monorail will begin this week. The trials are scheduled to run under the supervision of PS Baghel, retired Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS).
This is the very first time that a retired CMRS will be roped in for the inspection of a system. He is expected to check signaling and telecommunication systems, indicators, rolling stock, automatic fare collection gates, service scheduling, and other operational aspects.
These trials, as well as the inspection process, will mostly last for the entire week. After this, they will wait for the conditional approvals and observations. An Maha Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation Limited (MMMOCL) official said that they are hoping to restart the services in June.

Repeated Delay In Restart
This latest development about the Mumbai Monorail comes after multiple delays in the restart deadlines by MMMOCL. This includes two scheduled restart deadlines: May 7 and the end of May.
In the month of April, the clearance for commercial operations was given only by the Independent Safety Assessor. Under the normal procedure, monorail systems do not undergo any second round of safety checks. But after repeated technical failures and glitches, authorities opted for another layer of safety checks.
