To enhance governance and ensure public service delivery, Ladakh has recently launched five new districts. Previously, the region had only two districts – Leh and Kargil. However, Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena has now approved the creation of five new districts – Nubra, Sham, Changthang, Zanskar, and Drass, bringing the total district count to seven.
The Lieutenant Governor described this change as a significant milestone that meets long-held aspirations of the local population. Lieutenant Governor also highlighted that this initiative aligns with Prime Minister Modi’s vision for a prosperous Ladakh. The initiative, approved by the Ministry of Home Affairs in August 2024 under Home Minister Amit Shah, aims to improve local governance and enhance administrative performance.

Why Does Ladakh Need 5 New Districts
Officials believe that establishing these new districts will help decentralize administration, allowing for quicker access to public services, particularly in remote areas. The Lieutenant Governor further added that this decision could pave the way for new growth opportunities, employment, and entrepreneurship in the region.
Ladakh, which became a Union Territory in 2019 following the division of Jammu and Kashmir, is the largest UT by area but has a low population density. The administration is dedicated to ensuring that all citizens benefit from this important development.
