Indian Railways Tightens Luggage Rules With Weight Caps And Penalties

Indian Railways Tightens Luggage Rules

Traveling by train in India is often seen as a cost-effective choice, especially since it allows passengers to bring more luggage than domestic airlines typically permit. While airlines usually limit check-in baggage to around 15 kg and carry-on luggage to approximately 7 kg, trains provide a more generous allowance. However, you also know that Indian Railways has specific luggage restrictions as well.

Recently, the South Central Railway shared important information about these limits on X (formerly Twitter), highlighting the need for travelers to verify their luggage weight before boarding to avoid incurring extra charges.

The West Central Railway regulations also highlight that passengers can carry a certain weight of luggage in their compartment without incurring any charges. This free luggage allowance differs by class of travel. Children between the ages of 5 and 12 are entitled to half of the free allowance, with a cap of 50 kg. Additionally, there is a small margin allowed above this limit. Each class has a specified maximum weight for luggage, which includes the free allowance.

Indian Railways Tightens Luggage Rules: Make Note Of These Luggage Allowances

The luggage allowance differs depending on the class of travel. Here’s a breakdown of the limits:

  • In AC First Class, passengers can carry 70 kg plus a marginal allowance of 15 kg, with a total limit of 150 kg.
  • AC 2-Tier sleeper or First Class allows 50 kg with 10 kg extra, totaling 100 kg.
  • For the AC 3-Tier sleeper and the AC chair car, the allowance is 40 kg plus 10 kg, capped at 40 kg.
  • Sleeper Class permits 40 kg along with an additional 10 kg for a total of 80 kg, while Second Class allows 35 kg and a marginal 10 kg, making a total of 70 kg.

You must also keep in mind that the free allowance refers to the weight you can carry without additional costs, while the marginal allowance provides some flexibility for extra luggage at a standard fee. The maximum limit is strictly enforced, and exceeding it can result in penalties.

For children aged 5 to 12 years, the luggage limit is halved, capped at 50 kg. If you need to take additional luggage, pre-booking it costs 1.5 times the regular fare. If you fail to pre-book and exceed the free allowance, you will face a hefty fee that is six times the standard rate, along with a minimum penalty of ₹50 for going over the maximum allowed limit.
