Indian Railway Rules To Take Note Of Before Traveling In October For Chhath, Pujo, And Diwali

Railway ticket checking and ID verification

October is one of the busiest months for train travel in India, with a packed festival calendar bringing people home. With Durga Puja and Dussehra-Diwali falling around this period, railways can get crowded and last-minute travel can be stressful.

If you’re planning to travel by train this October, you must make note of these Indian Railway rules for passengers. From carrying the right identification to avoiding common ticketing mistakes, here’s what you need to know before boarding your train.

Indian Railway Rules You Must Make Note Of Before Traveling!

Traveling On A Shared Ticket

According to an Economic Times report, Central Railway is set to launch an intensive, month-long ticket-checking drive in October 2026. The officials said that the drive will specifically scrutinize tickets booked under concessional fares, those subject to fixed reservation quotas, and those linked to railway passes. Failing to produce a valid ID could result in the entire group being treated as ticketless.

If passengers are traveling on a single shared ticket, reports say that at least one person in the group must carry valid ID proof during the journey. This applies universally, regardless of whether the ticket was booked at a general fare or under a specific concession.

If the required ID is not produced during checking, every passenger traveling on that ticket will be deemed to be traveling without a valid ticket. For passengers claiming fixed concessions or reserved quotas, eligibility will be verified strictly by ID, rather than solely by the ticket.

New Checks For e-Pass And PTO Holders & Unreserved Tickets

Railway staff and their families, who frequently utilize digital e-Passes for free travel or Privilege Ticket Orders (PTO) for discounted fares, are also under the scanner.

The Central Railway has mandated that anyone traveling on an e-Pass or PTO must carry their original ID throughout the journey.

Before boarding the train, these passes must be properly converted into a formal ‘authority to travel.

Passengers skipping this crucial step can face fines and penalties, at par with those caught without a valid ticket.

However, those traveling on unreserved tickets can also face consequences. Ticket-checking staff will aggressively verify the authenticity of unreserved tickets, and will use the TTE app to verify the ticket on the spot.

Double The Penalty For Ticketless Travel

Traveling without a ticket is one of the most basic Indian Railway rules that one should not violate. However, if you’re caught violating this rule, get ready to pay the existing amount! Indian Railways has increased the penalty for ticketless travel. The minimum penalty, which was INR 250 earlier, has been increased to INR 500 as per an official notice.

Train travelers found traveling without a ticket will now have to pay the fare amount along with the excess charge or penalty. The notice also mentioned that failure to comply with the rules and not paying the penalty will result in legal action. Violators may have to face court proceedings and imprisonment of up to six months.

Upgraded Passenger Reservation From August 2026

The Indian Railway rules and regulations are being reinforced to ensure fair service and improved passenger experience. Indian Railways recently introduced Aadhaar verification for Tatkal bookings and provided the option for passengers to modify their boarding station up to 30 minutes before departure.

Starting in August 2026, train bookings will begin transitioning into a new Passenger Reservation System (PRS), replacing the existing platform active since 1986. Along with the new PRS overhaul, Indian Railways is advancing digital technology and making the RailOne Mobile App more efficient and user-friendly with each passing day.
