This updated service applies only to those with confirmed reserved tickets and is valid for personal items that will be transported within the reserved compartments, provided they adhere to designated weight limits. When purchasing tickets online, passengers have the option to declare any luggage exceeding the free allowance. The booking system will give all necessary information beforehand, including class-specific baggage limits, maximum weights allowed, restricted items, and details regarding applicable charges and penalties.
What Is The Free Luggage Allowance Limit
The free luggage allowance varies based on the travel class you choose. In AC First Class, you can carry up to 70 kg for free, with the option to add up to 150 kg for an additional fee. For First Class and AC 2-Tier, the free limit is 50 kg, extendable to 100 kg with charges. If you’re traveling in Sleeper Class, you can take 40 kg for free, while Second Class allows 35 kg, with a maximum of 70 kg available for extra fees.
For the AC 3-Tier, AC 3 Economy, and AC Chair Car classes, the luggage limit is capped at 40 kg, and excess baggage cannot be booked unless it falls within the chargeable free allowance.
How Will The Excess Luggage Be Calculated
Additionally, there are specific size limitations for luggage. In the AC 3-Tier, AC 3 Economy, and AC Chair Car, the dimensions should not exceed 55 cm x 45 cm x 22.5 cm. For AC First Class, AC 2-Tier, and Sleeper Class, the maximum dimensions allowed are 100 cm x 60 cm x 25 cm.
If you exceed your free luggage limit, you’ll incur charges at 1.5 times the standard rate, starting at a minimum fee of Rs 30, and these charges are calculated in increments of 10 kg. Please note that the minimum distance for these charges is 50 km.
To book excess luggage, travelers can use the Indian Railways parcel portal. This process requires registration and login. After selecting your train and completing the forwarding note with estimated freight costs, present your luggage at the originating station along with the printed e-forwarding note. The luggage will be weighed, and upon payment, you will receive a Railway Receipt confirming the final charges.
