Uttarakhand has made history by becoming the first Indian state to adopt a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in India. On Monday, January 27, Uttarakhand's Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami announced the implementation of the UCC. The primary goal of the UCC is to promote equality among various groups. According to Chief Minister Dhami, the UCC aims to create uniformity in personal civil matters that have historically discriminated based on caste, religion, gender, and other factors. Read on to learn more about this significant development.

Chief Minister Dhami took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to share important updates regarding the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). He assured citizens that all necessary preparations for the implementation of the UCC have been completed. This includes the approval of the rules of the Act and the training of relevant officials. The UCC addresses diverse issues, including marriage, divorce, inheritance, and live-in relationships.

According to the UCC, the minimum legal age for marriage is set at 21 years for men and 18 years for women. Marriages must be between individuals who meet specific legal requirements. Additionally, after the act's implementation, it will be mandatory to register marriages within 60 days of the ceremony.

The act applies to all Uttarakhand residents, including those living outside the state, but it does not apply to Scheduled Tribes and certain protected communities.

Furthermore, legal registration of live-in relationships is now required in Uttarakhand, ensuring equal status for all partners involved. Online registration facilities have been established to streamline the process, eliminating the need for individuals to visit government offices.

Moreover, the UCC guarantees equal property rights for all children, regardless of gender or marital status. It also provides women with equal rights in matters of marriage, divorce, and inheritance.
