Indian Railways is stepping into the future of transportation by introducing its first hydrogen fuel cell train, making strides towards a greener and more sustainable travel experience. The first edition of the trainset, comprising ten cars, will operate on the dedicated Jind-Sonipat route in Haryana, and it’s gearing up for launch soon. With a maximum speed of 75 km/h, powered by a cutting-edge 1200 KW hydrogen fuel cell system, this initiative represents a significant advancement in eco-friendly travel. Unlike traditional diesel engines, hydrogen fuel cells produce electricity through a chemical reaction, emitting only water vapor. This technology offers a clean alternative to conventional rail systems, positioning India alongside global innovators like Germany, Japan, China, and the USA that are harnessing hydrogen for sustainable rail transport. While the technology is still emerging, its potential in revolutionizing rail travel is undeniable.
India’s First Hydrogen Train To Launch In Haryana
The Jind-Sonipat section has been chosen as the experimental track for this innovative project. A state-of-the-art hydrogen storage and refueling facility has been established at Jind, complete with a license from the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO) to safely handle compressed hydrogen gas.
This facility includes an advanced hydrogen compression system for refueling, ensuring that operations run smoothly and efficiently. There are multiple safety features in place, such as hydrogen leak detectors and flame sensors, which will be routinely monitored to maintain safe operations.

Moreover, comprehensive operation and maintenance guidelines for both the hydrogen train and its fueling plant have been approved. To ensure the utmost safety, a 24/7 monitoring system will oversee refueling operations, while certified personnel will manage essential tasks, supported by a regular audit and inspection regime.
During the initial rollout, skilled technicians will accompany the train to facilitate seamless operations.
India’s First Hydrogen Train Will Benefit Local Travel
This train will help local travel and make history as the longest hydrogen-powered train on a broad-gauge network. It was designed according to the standards set by the Research, Design & Standards Organisation (RDSO) and will operate on the 90 km Jind-Sonipat route.
A special facility for hydrogen production and refueling has been built at Jind Junction, costing about INR 120 crore. The facility covers 2,000 square meters and has an underground storage system that can hold up to 3,000 kilograms of hydrogen. To address its large water needs – around 40,000 liters per hour- rainwater harvesting systems have been installed on the station roofs, making the operation more sustainable.
