Summers are here and how! We have all been facing the wrath of the heatwaves ever since March began. With the temperatures breaking all the records this year, the summer season has now given rise to another issue. The seven lakes that supply water to Mumbai are now left with only 23 percent of their water stock. This is the reason why the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced a water cut of 10 percent in Mumbai starting from May 15, 2026.

BMC Announces Water Cut, Urges People To Conserve Water
Mumbaikars will face a 10% water cut starting from May 15. The civic body, BMC, has urged all the citizens of Mumbai to try to conserve water as much as possible. It is currently waiting for approval in order to draw additional water reserves from Vaitarna and Bhatsa lakes.
According to the latest updates as of May 11, all seven lakes that supply water to Mumbai city collectively are holding about 23.52% of their total storage capacity. This means that Bhatsa, Upper Vaitarna, Middle Vaitarna, Tansa, Modak Sagar, Vihar, and Tulsi currently hold only 3.40 lakh million litres of water. This water stock, according to the experts and officials, is enough only for the next 83 days.
The BMC, hence in line with state government directives, is all set to implement the water cut from this week itself. This water cut implementation will help in conserving the water supply and also stretch the available water stock till the end of August 2026.

Rising Evaporation & Forecast Of Below Normal Monsoon In Mumbai
The level of water stock this year is higher as compared to the stock in the previous two years. However, the recurring crisis talks about the growing urban pressure and no attention towards the years of warnings about the same. BMC has not been able to completely implement backup systems for the city, which is heavily dependent on the monsoon for water supply.
While the officials say that the current water stock is enough, the rising temperatures and evaporation have led to the idea of implementing water cuts. The concern is greater as the weather forecast suggests a below-normal monsoon this year. The reason behind it is the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) and El Niño.

Mumbaikars will now have to face water cuts from May 15. This is because the water stock collectively from all seven lakes is very low, thanks to the increase in evaporation and temperatures this summer.
