As per local historical traditions, long ago, the locals would launch small oil lamps floating on banana-stem boats into the river at dawn. This beloved ritual kept evolving over time, and people kept taking it a step further. Today, this intimate tradition has evolved into a massive state-sponsored boat modeling competition that is organized by the Goa Department of Tourism.
What adds to the ambiance is the Valvanti River flowing past the Shree Vithal Temple. It creates an enchanting natural river amphitheater that is the perfect backdrop for this competition. Prior to this show, however, another brilliant spectacle takes place. A giant effigy of the demon Tripurasura is set ablaze on the riverbank, symbolizing the triumph of light over dark forces.
