On Thursday, May 20, 2026, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced multiple menstrual hygiene initiatives in schools. These initiatives were announced on the occasion of Menstrual Hygiene Day. Delhi CM Announces Menstrual Hygiene Initiatives In Schools
Rekha Gupta, Delhi’s Chief Minister, said that all the schools in Delhi would have organised and clean washrooms. The schools must have regular menstrual health campaigns and regular hygiene awareness programmes for both girls and boys.
They will also set up menstruation corners and medical rooms. These corners or rooms must be well equipped with inner wear, sanitary napkins, and other hygiene products that are essential. She also mentioned that schools must speed up the process of installing vending machines in school washrooms.

The Delhi government will also introduce a toll-free number, which will be displayed at school walls and entrances. Through this number, all the parents and students will be able to share complaints and suggestions, and complaints with the administration.
It also ensured that government school students would also get to participate in the Hausalon Ki Udaan programme. The Chief Minister also mentioned that it would collect school-wise HPV vaccination data.
Menstrual hygiene is closely linked to the health, dignity and confidence of every girl.

Improvement In Hygiene Awareness & Access To Facilities
The Delhi government also announced plans to install RO water coolers in schools. They will also undertake major plantation drives from June to August. The pending improvement works, like whitewashing and school infrastructure, will also be carried out as soon as possible.
All these announcements are a part of the government’s efforts to improve access to sanitary facilities and also improve hygiene awareness for adolescent girls in schools. These practices will also improve the overall health support for them as well.
National Menstrual Hygiene Day (MH Day) is observed globally and in India on May 28. The date is symbolic as May is the fifth month of the year, symbolising 5 days of periods, and 28 is the average cycle length.
