Ayodhya Deepotsav 2026 Date

Once a local festival, Ayodhya Deepotsav, today is a globally popular cultural event that celebrates the spiritual core of India. It is one of the grandest celebrations of devotion and light in the country. The festival is deeply rooted in tradition and mythology.

The city of Ayodhya is lit up in divine glory on this day to commemorate the return of Lord Rama to his kingdom after defeating the demon king Ravana and spending 14 years in exile. Its temples, streets, and especially the sacred banks of the Saryu River are all illuminated with lakhs of earthen lamps or diyas. This celebration beautifully symbolizes the triumph of light over darkness.

Last year, the annual Deepotsav celebrations set two Guinness World Records:

There were 26.17 lakh diyas or lamps lit across the 56 ghats.

Another record was that about 2,128 priests, Vedacharyas, and Vedic scholars performed the shloka recitation and grand Maha Aarti.

This year, the festival will be celebrated on November 7. You may have read many websites claiming the festival will run from November 6 to November 8, and they are not entirely wrong. Ram Mandir Darshan

During Ayodhya Deepotsav, many people tend to visit the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Mandir, which is a major reason behind people traveling to Ayodhya. It is dedicated to Lord Ram and is an important pilgrimage site and also a natural addition to your Deepotsav trip.

As this is the festival period with Deepotsav and Diwali, the city can become exceptionally busy. Hence, the temple arrangements might differ from ordinary days. So make sure you plan your Ram Mandir darshan separately and do not club it with Deepotsav’s events. You must keep your schedule a bit flexible for long queues and security checks.

Before setting out, check the temple trust’s latest visitor instructions on their official website. They also mention information related to any pass requirements and darshan timings for devotees to refer to.

Ghats To Visit

During Deepotsav, the riverfront is the focal point of the city’s celebrations. The atmosphere is filled with the sound of chants, prayers, and bells ringing as people come together to light lamps on the ghats. The Deepotsav spans about 56 ghats along the Sarayu River. It features millions of earthen diyas or oil lamps being lit simultaneously, which makes it a world-record illumination.

The key ghats involved in this event are:

Ram ki Paidi

Chaudhary Charan Singh Ghat

Bhajan Sandhya Ghat

Naya Ghat

Laxman Kila Ghat

This year, over 28 lakh diyas will be lit across the 56 Sarayu River ghats. This will be managed by thousands of students and local volunteers.

One of the most meaningful experiences is the Sarayu aarti, which you surely should not miss.

Pro Tip: Make sure you arrive a bit earlier than the time stated to get a good view of the festivities. If the main ghat is too crowded, do not take a risk and instead follow the official directions.
