Auli vs Gulmarg: Which Is Better For Snowfall, Skiing And Winter Holidays?

Auli in Uttarakhand and Gulmarg in Jammu and Kashmir

If you thought choosing between Auli and Gulmarg for winter holidays is very much like choosing between two same colored outfits, then you might be a bit wrong! It is more related to the kind of mountain environment that aligns with your vacation goals. While Auli in Uttarakhand is an alpine meadow surrounded by 7,000-meter peaks, Gulmarg in Jammu and Kashmir is a high-altitude basin with vast terrain. Wondering which one is better? Well, let’s check this comprehensive guide to help you choose better.

Auli vs Gulmarg

Auli or Gulmarg For Snowfall

Gulmarg is located roughly about 390 km farther north than Auli. Hence, it has a significantly higher vertical boundary. While the base village is located at 2,650 meters, the famous Gulmarg Gondola takes skiers up to Phase 2 at the Apharwat Peak, which is about 3,980 meters above sea level. This massive elevation allows Gulmarg to hold deep dry powder snow late into the season, from late December to late March.

Auli’s slopes top out around 3,049 meters. Between mid-January and late February, Auli receives thick snow blankets, but lower elevation limits the season window. Late March or Early December visits often bring the risk of witnessing thin cover or slush. However, Auli has artificial snowmaking cannons along the slope, which help maintain groomed conditions on the ski runs (primary).

Auli vs Gulmarg For Skiing

Taking about skiing, Auli is perfect for first-time skiers as it offers an approachable and controlled setting. The Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam (GMVN) is said to operate structured 14-day and 7-day beginner ski courses. These courses are taught by certified instructors, include standard equipment rentals, and offer smooth runs. The gentle gradient of the slope makes sure that learners can easily focus on building a technique without feeling intimidated by variable snow conditions or steep precipices.

For intermediate, freeride, or advanced skiers, Gulmarg is known as one of Asia’s premier big-mountain destinations. Phase 2 of the Gondola ride takes one to a 1,330-meter vertical drop into chutes, expansive alpine bowls, and tree runs that are filled with untracked powder. Skiing here feels like more than a typical groomed resort experience; visitors say it feels closer to a North American or European backcountry experience. It does have beginner slopes near the town basin but is loved for its high-altitude terrain.
