If you're planning a trip to Rann Utsav and don't want to spend the night in Tent City then you're in luck. You can actually go and see the famed White Rann in Kutch, Gujarat and do so without having to book an accommodation package with the Rann Utsav Tent City.
However there's a difference between just going to the White Rann and actually experiencing the full range of things on offer in Tent City. From entry permits and accommodation through to the activities and the sightseeing, here's what you need to know before you go.
Can You Visit Rann Utsav Without Booking Tent City?
Yes you can go to the White Rann on your own without staying at Tent City. You can book accommodation elsewhere, organise your own transport and get the requisite government entry permit to go and see the salt desert. The White Rann is a tourist area and Tent City is a managed accommodation complex with its own activities, food and entertainment. A White Rann entry permit does not in any way confer access to the Tent City facilities or cultural programme.
Rann Utsav is a celebration of Kutch's traditional handicrafts, folk music, folk dance and local food. It is linked to the village of Dhordo in the area of the Great Rann of Kutch. The 2026-27 Tent City season is being advertised from 1st November 2026 to 7th March 2027. The wider festival schedule may of course be different.
Rann Utsav Entry Tickets, Permits And Charges

Visitors wishing to go into the designated White Rann tourist area will need to obtain an entry permit via the Gujarat government's permit system. The application process, ID requirements, vehicle requirements and fees can all be found on the official government permit website. Those booking into Tent City will generally have their permits arranged as part of their package, whereas independent visitors will need to arrange the permits separately.
The exact entry charges for the 2026-27 season have not been independently confirmed via official sources. There is also no confirmation as to whether day passes are available for people who wish to enter Tent City without booking a stay. Best to just contact the operator. Don't assume that a White Rann permit gives you access to Tent City.

What Can You Experience Without Staying At Tent City?
The White Rann is the main draw. The sheer scale of the white salt is quite something, especially at sunset when the light on the desert is absolutely stunning. You can wander around the designated areas, take photos and just enjoy the open space. If there are any vacancies, there will be a range of activities for the independent traveller to do, including camel rides, handicrafts to buy, and various cultural experiences,e available via local operators or at the various venues.
The activities listed in the Tent City packages are not necessarily included in the government entry permit. The packages themselves do include some meals, some cultural entertainment and some organised experiences. Access to these is of course subject to the operator's own rules and the particular package you have purchased. If you have a particular performance or activity you're keen to attend then you should check with the operator in advance as to whether non-residents are permitted to attend.
Where Can You Stay Instead Of Tent City?

You don't have to stay at the official Tent City. You can, of course, opt for privately run resorts, hotels, and homestays in the area around Dhordo and the surrounding villages. These will vary in price and in the experience they offer, though they can become very scarce during the festival period. Bhuj is another viable option, particularly if you're planning a day trip to the area, as it offers a much wider range of accommodation.
Located some 80 to 85km from Dhordo, Bhuj is generally 1.5 to 2 hours by road (depending on traffic etc). If you're heading out to watch the sunset at the White Rann you'll need to have your get back arranged in advance. It's also worth checking the current entry timings and permit requirements (particularly if you're going back to Bhuj after dark).
Is Visiting Rann Utsav For One Day Worth It?

If that's your primary motivation for going to see the White Rann, a day trip enables you to see the salt desert, do some photography and check out the various sites that are open to the public, all without having to pay for the full Tent City package. It also gives you the freedom to customise your own itinerary, transport, and accommodation.
However, for those wanting to take in the organised cultural performances, packaged sightseeing, and traditional food experiences, Tent City is probably the place to stay. The packages will give you a whole range of experiences in one go, whereas the independent visitor can, of course, pick and choose the attractions they are most interested in. For a one-day visit, you'd want to go to the White Rann, and you'd need to check permit availability, entry times, and transport in advance.
