Is Taste Of Kerala In Mumbai Worth It? Honest Review

During weekdays, the Sadhya at Taste of Kerala is vegetarian. That is why we decided to order À la carte. Here is an item-by-item review of the food we ordered:
Chicken Kizhi Parotta
The parotta was hands down the best dish we enjoyed at Taste of Kerala. It comes wrapped in a banana leaf, and the flavors are off the chart. It is very wholesome and made us grateful for the existence of Mallus and Mallu food.
Cost: INR 295
Rating: 9/10
Mutton Pepper Masala
The mutton wasn’t as tender as we would have liked it to be, and we think there are equally budget-friendly places that make this dish better. We also found it to be a little too spicy for our taste. It wasn’t a peppery spice; it was more a chili-spice, which was the issue.
Cost: INR 375
Rating: 6/10

Chicken Biryani
Kerala biryani is famously different from biryani in other parts of the country. The spices here are more muted. We felt that more than the spices, the dry fruits were the star of the show.
Cost: INR 180
Rating: 6/10
Surmai Fry
The Surmai Fry was actually quite meaty and delicious, but it was missing a little bit of masala. This was our major complaint about the dish. The masala was so tasty that adding more of it to the fish would have really made a difference.
Cost: INR 205
Rating: 7/10 (8/10 if it had more masala)

Author’s Note

Taste Of Kerala, in our experience, was just alright. It was neither groundbreaking nor abysmal. Our start was very strong with the Kizhi Parotta. We enjoyed that greatly. However, after that, every other dish proved to be something of a letdown. The mutton in the Mutton Pepper Fry could have been more tender, the fish in the Surmai Fry could have used more masala, and the chicken biryani was okay too.
The service, too, was alright. Our waiter seemed a little inattentive, but apart from that, no other major complaints. Our food came pretty quickly as well. Based on our experience, we’re not very sure we’d be returning given that there are better options quite close by. So, here’s our final verdict:
Taste Of Kerala, Fort: Key Facts And Rating On The CloseUp Freshness Scale
Food: 2.5/5
Ambiance: 4/5
Service: 3/5

Return Factor: 2/5

Summing Up
Taste of Kerala may be one of the most iconic Kerala restaurants in Mumbai, but apart from the few dishes it is known for, we failed to see the hype around it. While it was not the worst in terms of its food, service, and ambiance, there certainly are better places you can visit.
