When you think of the capital of India, Delhi is often the first place that comes to mind. However, India also has a summer capital! In 1864, Shimla was declared the summer capital of India, and since then, it has become a popular hill station and the capital of Himachal Pradesh. Known for its UNESCO World Heritage-listed toy train that connects it to Kalka, as well as its stunning colonial architecture, Shimla has much to offer visitors. In addition to its existing attractions, Shimla is set to get Asia's longest ropeway. This new ropeway will have the capacity to transport 2,000 passengers per hour.

Asia's longest ropeway is set to feature 15 boarding points and 660 cabins, with an estimated project cost of INR 1,734 crore. This initiative aims to ease traffic congestion while allowing visitors to enjoy a breathtaking aerial view of Shimla. Once completed, this ropeway will become the second-largest in the world. Currently, the largest ropeway is in Bolivia, spanning approximately 32 km.

The Tara Devi-Shimla Ropeway Project which will be Asia's longest ropeway is a 13.79 km development being carried out by the Ropeway and Rapid Transport System Development Corporation in partnership with the Himachal Pradesh government. This ropeway will connect Maa Tara Devi to Sanjauli, covering a service area of about 60 km. It will feature several boarding stations, including locations such as the Court Complex, Tutikandi Parking Area, the Railway Station, and IGMC Hospital, among others.

Additionally, there will be 90 charging stations established at the boarding points, along with solar panels on the cabins to promote eco-friendliness.

Funding for the project will come mostly from the New Development Bank, contributing 80% of the total costs, with the government covering the rest. Once operational, this ropeway is expected to enhance travel experiences in Shimla.
