ToggleWhat Is Rath Yatra?
Chariot Festival, or Rath Yatra, is a well-known massive Hindu festival where the deities of the temple are placed on huge chariots and then paraded through the streets. The most famous and largest chariot festival in India takes place in Puri, Odisha, known as the Jagannath Rath Yatra. In this yatra, the three deities, Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Goddess Subhadra, travel on huge chariots to visit their aunt. The yatra begins from the main Jagannath Temple and ends at the Gundicha Temple. The siblings reside at their aunt’s house for a week and then return home. This homecoming of the siblings is known as Bahuda Yatra.

Sidha Rath
The main Kolkata Rath Yatra begins from the ISKCON temple with festivities beginning early morning. These festivities include special pujas, bhog offerings, and spiritual discourses. The three beautifully decorated huge chariots carrying Lord Jagannath, Lord Balaram, and Goddess Subhadra Mata are brought out in public amidst the roaring sound of chants and conch shells. The procession generally flags off between 12:00 PM and 1:30 PM, navigating through the massive crowds.
Rath Mela
Rath Mela will be hosted at the Tai Brigade Parade Ground for 8 days, starting from July 17 to July 23, 2026. It is one of the city’s favorite monsoon traditions, which runs hand-in-hand with the grand ISKCON rath yatra celebrations. The ground transforms into a vibrant, nine-day carnival space after the chariots arrive here.
Once the chariots reach the ground, the deities reside at a makeshift Gundicha Temple constructed here. The temple is open from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM for daily darshan. The deities are offered daily Chhappan Bhog offerings. The distribution of sacred, hot Khichdi Prasadam to devotees also takes place. Devotional Vedic cultural performances and spiritual discourses will also take place here in the evening.
Ulta Rath
The conclusion of the festival, the Ulta Rath, takes place on July 24th. The chariots retrace their path back to the main Albert Road temple from the Parade Ground.
