In what can be said as a first-of-its-kind initiative in India, Maharashtra’s Sindhudurg is about to receive the country’s first-ever underwater museum, artificial coral reef, and submarine tourism project.
The ambitious project, developed by the Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC), revolves mainly around Guldar, near the Nivati rock formations. It is a decommissioned Kumbhir-class landing ship of the Indian Navy. This decommissioned ship is being transformed into a breathtaking underwater museum.
Once the ship is installed on the seabed, nearly 22 meters below sea level, the warship is expected to serve as a major attraction for scuba divers and marine adventure enthusiasts.
“The project will give a completely new direction to marine tourism in India while ensuring sustainable development of natural resources,” Sindhudurg Collector Trupti Dhomase said during a visit to the Indian Institute of Scuba Diving and Aquatic Sports at Tarkarli. For those unversed, Tarkarli is one of the most popular diving destinations as well as stargazing spots in India.

India’s First Underwater Museum: Features, Operation Timeline, And Emphasis On Sustainability
MTDC’s ambitious underwater museum is planned not merely as a marine tourism project but also as a center for marine conservation, heritage reuse, and adventure tourism.
Once the underwater museum is operational, tourists will be able to experience scuba diving expeditions, guided underwater tours, submarine rides, underwater photography, and marine biodiversity exploration.
MTDC officials also stated that a submarine tourism facility is being built that will also allow non-divers to explore the underwater attraction. The submarine will allow tourists to safely view the underwater warship and the marine ecosystem without diving into the sea.
The project is currently under construction and is expected to be operational within one-and-a-half years.
However, the project will not merely focus on tourism. Artificial coral reefs will also be developed around the submerged vessel to create a healthy habitat for marine life. As the coral reefs bloom, colorful fish species and marine organisms are expected to colonize the reefs, developing a sustainable marine ecosystem.
The emphasis on sustainability and biodiversity conservation will be significant in the development of India’s first underwater museum in Sindhudurg. The National Institute of Oceanography, Goa, concluded that the selected region contains no natural coral formations.
Authorities have also cleared out that all hazardous and polluting materials from the ship have been discarded to make it environmentally conducive for the growth of the artificial coral reefs. Moreover, there will be restrictions on fishing and anchoring within a 500-meter radius of the project for protecting the fragile marine environment.
