1. Mudia Purnima, Govardhan, Uttar Pradesh
In the famous Braj (Mathura-Vrindavan) region, Guru Purnima is known and celebrated as Mudia Purnima or Mudia Mela. Attracting millions of devotees over a week, this is one of the largest religious gatherings in northern India.
The festival commemorates the great Sanatana Goswami, a 16th-century saint. He was the disciple of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. After the saint passed away on Guru Purnima, as a mourning expression, all the local Gaudiya Vaishnava sadhus shaved their heads (mudia). Then, they walked around the sacred Govardhan Hill and sang kirtans.
Even today, thousands of sadhus shave their heads and walk 21 km barefoot around the Govardhan Hill. They are joined by millions of pilgrims for this parikrama. The entire path turns into a sea of people dancing, singing, and offering prayers during downpours.

2. Guru Purnima, Shirdi, Maharashtra
While Guru Purnima is celebrated across India, Shirdi celebrates it with a historical legacy. It is the only festival that Shirdi Sai Baba is believed to have encouraged his devotees to celebrate.
In 1908, a devotee named Tatyasaheb Nulkar wished to worship Sai Baba on Guru Purnima. Baba asked him to worship a wooden pillar in the Dwarkamai mosque. Nulkar, without asking any questions, obeyed Baba, and his prayers reached the feet of Sai Baba.
Every year, the Shri Sai Baba Sansthan Trust hosts a massive three-day-long festival. It features a grand Palkhi or palanquin and a non-stop 24-hour reading of the Sri Sai Satcharitra (the sacred biography of Sai Baba). The festival also features a massive Annadanam serving free food to people and a Ratha or chariot procession through the streets. Baba’s portrait is pulled through the streets amidst the chanting and shower of flowers by devotees.

3. Dharmachakra Pravartana, Sarnath, Uttar Pradesh
Buddhists worldwide celebrate Guru Purnima as Asadha Purnima or Dharmachakra Pravartana Diwas. This day marks the birth of the Buddhist Sangha, or monastic community, for them.
Sarnath is believed to be the geographic cradle of Buddhist teachings. It was here that Siddhartha Gautama delivered his very first sermon to his five companions. He symbolically turned the “Wheel of Dharma” on this day by teaching the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path.
This day marks the onset of Vassa, in which the Buddhist monks confine themselves to their local monasteries. They do this to prevent stepping on insects and crops growing during the monsoon. They gather at the ancient Dhamekh Stupa to recite sacred Pali suttas.
The devotees visit temples to practice meditation and commit themselves to the Uposatha. It is the renewal of the Eight Precepts of Buddhism.
4. Guru Purney, Darjeeling & Sikkim
Deep in the mountainous terrains of Kalimpong, Sikkim, and Darjeeling, Guru Purnima is celebrated as Guru Purney, especially the shamanics.
According to the Himalayan shamanic lore, Guru Purnima is the day when the very first Jhyakari or shaman actually received cosmic spiritual knowledge from his spiritual master. Thus, rather than the temple prayer, the day is meant to honor the traditional healers. They are believed to be the mediators between nature and humans.
Shamans who belong to communities like Rai, Lepcha, Limbu, and Tamang dress up in traditional attire. This attire is adorned with rudraksha beads, peacock feathers, and heavy brass bells. They gather at local shrines and sacred forest spots to perform trance-like dances on the beats of Dhyangro. This drumming and dancing mimic the wild rhythms of nature and the cosmic dance of Shiva.
