What Is The Amarnath Yatra?
The Amarnath Yatra is said to be one of the most revered and sacred annual pilgrimages in Hinduism. It is also very challenging physically. Every summer-monsoon transition, hundreds of thousands of devotees, also known as Yatris, undertake this trek through the high-altitude, snow-capped Himalayas of Jammu & Kashmir to reach the revered Amarnath Cave. It is located at an altitude of about 12,756 feet.

What Is The Amarnath Yatra Medical Certificate?
The Amarnath Yatra medical certificate is officially known as the Compulsory Health Certificate (CHC). It is an important and mandatory clearance document that is required to be produced by the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board (SASB). This certificate validates that the respective pilgrim is physically fit to withstand low oxygen levels, steep trekking trails, and extreme cols as well.
Who Needs It?
Every single pilgrim who wishes to visit the holy cave is required to produce this certificate. No matter if you are trekking to the cave or taking a helicopter, the certificate is mandatory for all the pilgrims.
Age limit
- People between the ages of 13 and 70 are the only ones who are permitted to register for this yatra.
- Senior citizens above the age of 70, children below the age of 13, and women who are over 6 weeks pregnant are not allowed to undertake this yatra.
How To Get Amarnath Yatra Medical Certificate 2026?
In order to avoid any sort of fraudulent registration, the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board (SASB) accepts only those CHCs that are issued by authorized doctors and medical institutions. You can check the list of authorized doctors and government hospitals divided into state- and Union territory-wise. Certificates from non-designated doctors produced here will be rejected.
Process:
- Visit the official website of the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board (jksasb.nic.in) and download the Compulsory Health Certificate (CHC) form.
- Next, you need to go to the doctor and get your medical checkup done. For this, you need to take your government Identity proof like Aadhaar Card or Voter ID with two photographs to the doctor. The doctor may order you to get standard tests to check your respiratory and cardiovascular fitness.
- Once the test is cleared, the doctor will sign the document, stamp and attest your photo on that certificate.

Choose Your Route: Batal Vs Pahalgam
The pilgrims undertaking Amarnath Yatra must choose between two distinct pathways to reach the shrine. Both these routes have their own unique pros and cons, so the pilgrims need to choose one that suits them the best.
Pahalgam Route
Route Map: Pahalgam – Chandanwadi – Pissu Top – Zoji Bal – Naga Koti – Sheshnag – Warbal – Mahagunas Top – Pabibal – Panchtarni – Sangam – Cave
Distance: The distance between Pahalgam and Amarnath caves is between 36 km and 48 km. It will take about 3 to 4 days for a pilgrim to complete the yatra using this route.

Amarnath Yatra 2026 Registration

The registration for the Amarnath Yatra has already begun from April 15, 2026, and will end seven days before the conclusion of the yatra. Both online and offline registration close before the conclusion of the yatra or when the strict daily quota of pilgrims is filled.
