On 25th July 2026, Sarnath was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was the 45th Indian site to make it to the list. This may have prompted many to wonder what made the site so special. What Is The Story Behind Buddha’s First Sermon?
Stories of Buddha renouncing his life of luxury in search of meaning and truth abound. In an attempt to find an answer to the question of why humans suffer, he embarked on a spiritual journey along with five of his ascetic friends.
The six men engaged in extreme self-mortification or fasting. However, after engaging in the fast for a long time, Buddha realized that punishing the body and making it suffer did not help his mental and spiritual journey.
Consequently, he abandoned the project, had a meal, and regained his strength. He then sat under a tree in Bodh Gaya, where he finally attained enlightenment. Buddha wanted to share the knowledge he attained via enlightenment with others, so he came back to his five friends at the Deer Park.
The five other ascetics were angry at him for abandoning the project, so they planned to ignore him. However, when they saw the radiance and calm with which Buddha spoke of his creed, they immediately changed their minds and accepted his teachings.
When, at Sarnath, he shared his learnings with his friends, he not only gained followers, but it also marked the beginning of an intellectually and philosophically rich creed that we today know as Buddhism. Simply put, the site can be viewed as the birthplace of Buddhism.
That is why it has such immense significance in Buddhism and is considered one of the four pilgrimage sites in the religion. As a matter of fact, the Mahaparinibbana Sutta records the Buddha in his final days explicitly stating that it is one of the sites that his followers must visit.

What To See At Sarnath?
1. Dhamek Stupa
Dhamek Stupa marks the exact spot where Buddha delivered his very first sermon. The spot is marked by a humongous cylindrical tower that climbs to the height of 128 feet.
2. Sarnath Archaeological Museum
This historical museum houses several ancient relics, paintings, and symbols of religious and spiritual significance. It is a great place to saunter through for religious devotees and history buffs alike. You can also see the Ashoka pillar, an emblem of national significance.

3. Chaukhandi Stupa

This is a modern temple built in the early 1930s. It features several beautiful frescoes depicting the life of Buddha and key moments in his spiritual journey. The surrounding deer park is also a major attraction for tourists.
5. International Temples
There are several other temples in Sarnath that are made with architectural elements of other prominent Asian countries with a significant Buddhist population. You will find temples made in the traditional architectural styles of China, Japan, Thailand, and Tibet.
