State On A Plate: What Exactly Is Parsi Food?
One of our favourite stops was Café Farohar, located right by the Sohrabji Jamshedji Sodawaterwalla Dharamshala. Run by the adorable Hilla aunty and her enterprising son Shehzad, this restaurant is an absolute must-visit for any food lover in Udwada. (Insider tip: place your order in advance popular dishes sometimes run out by dinner service!) We were served a full Parsi Bhanu a traditional spread of appetisers, mains, and desserts. Our favourite was a platter of sizzling prawns, so good we ordered a second round almost immediately. We also tried Papeta Tarelli Chicken, a comforting chicken and potato curry, and Aantheli Chicken, a semi-dry preparation cooked with whole spices that we honestly enjoyed even more than the curry. We wrapped up the meal with Lagan nu Custard alongside a few other dessert options. Our meal at Café Farohar was so good that one visit isn't enough we're already planning to go back. From Dhansak and Patra ni Machhi to Berry Pulav and Sali Boti, we try some of the most iconic Parsi dishes right at the source, and learn what makes this cuisine so distinct from the rest of Indian food.
