Every year, during Durga Puja, the City of Joy transforms into an open-air art gallery, but 2026 is set to witness something extraordinary. The Vaishnavghata Patuli or Baishnabghata Patuli Upanagari Sarbojanin Durga Puja pandal is working on a theme that is simply beyond anyone’s imagination. The theme for the 2026 Durga Puja at the Baishnabghata Patuli Upanagari Sarbojanin Durga Puja pandal is “Antorlin.” It marks the first completely underground pandal experience. Here’s more about the theme:

Antorlin Durga Puja Theme

Conceptualized by renowned artist Partha Joardar, the theme for 2026 is “Antorlin”. Antorlin means immersive, buried, or underlying; it speaks to the resurgence of history through earthy layers. This underground installation mimics an archaeological excavation site, which invites visitors to descend into an unforgettable world.

In the context of the 2026 Patuli pandal, the theme explores how human history, cultural memory, and artistic legacy do not vanish when civilizations crumble. They sink into the earth, preserved beneath layers of soil until a new age unearths them.

The structural experience begins above ground. It takes devotees 8 feet beneath the surface, with a physical sensation of unearthing an ancient, lost heritage. Antorlin serves as a warning and a reminder: humanity must stay grounded in its history, roots, and foundational values.

The Flow Of Exploring The Theme

Visitors have to walk on sloped earthen ramps that will take them to ground level, which is 8 feet deep. They are lined with terracotta strata and root formations. The acoustic ambient sounds help make the experience feel more realistic. Visitors have to pass through the dark area to reach illumination, symbolizing the journey into self and history.

There are display zones that feature ruined pillars, fossilized structural art, ancient script motifs, and terracotta reliefs. They depict ancient geological strata, fossils, and remnants of bygone human eras. The installations extensively use exposed root networks, unbaked clay, weathered stone textures, and natural earth tones.

Unlike other pandals, there is no huge Goddess Durga idol inside. Instead, there is a central subterranean cavern where Goddess Durga’s idol is placed. It appears as if the Goddess is breaking through the layers of the earth. This symbolizes spiritual awakening and also rebirth from the ruins. This idol is illuminated by a warm spotlight, which mimics sunlight entering an underground vault.

What Is The Message Behind The Theme?

The core message of the theme “Antorlin” revolves around the following:

It says that arts, civilizations, and traditions may fade away from the surface, but they are never lost. They actually sink into the earth and hold their breath until a new era unearths them. Human heritage similarly lives in continuity, as nothing really vanishes.

The theme forces visitors to move into the dim, underground space before they witness illumination where Goddess Durga resides. It serves as a metaphor of a psychological and spiritual journey. It reflects going inward after navigating through forgotten pasts and darkness. The theme demonstrates how clarity and divine energy too come up from the deepest place.

It is also a reminder that no matter how deep an individual or culture is buried, their re-emergence is simply inevitable.
