Mumbai’s suburban rail network is set for a significant upgrade as Central Railway prepares to introduce its first 12-car non-AC EMU train equipped with an automatic door closure system. Built by the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai, the new rake is currently stationed at Kurla Car Shed and is expected to enter passenger service after completing a series of mandatory trials.

According to Central Railway officials, the train will undergo rigorous testing before it is cleared for daily operations. These trials include the Confirmatory Oscillograph Car Run conducted by the Research Design and Standards Organisation. This test evaluates critical performance parameters such as speed, acceleration, oscillation levels, and overall ride quality. The aim is to ensure that the rake performs safely under real-world conditions and remains stable across Mumbai’s heavily used suburban tracks.

In addition to technical testing, the train will also go through Passenger Convenience and Safety trials. These assessments will examine braking efficiency under different loads and speeds, validate the automatic door system, and ensure proper functioning of alarms and interlocking mechanisms designed to prevent accidents. Integration with existing signalling systems will also be tested to guarantee seamless and safe operations.

Non-AC Train With Automatic Doors Highlights

The highlight of the new rake is its automatic sliding door system, a first for non-AC suburban trains in Mumbai. Designed with an anti-drag mechanism, the doors are expected to reduce the risk of passengers falling from moving trains, a long-standing safety concern in the city. The design also includes louvered sections that allow airflow while keeping doors closed.

 Passenger comfort has also been a key focus. The train features stainless steel seating in second-class compartments and cushioned seating in first class. Wider windows have been introduced to improve ventilation and allow more natural light inside the coaches. The rake also includes vestibule connectivity with half gangways arranged in a 6+3+3 configuration, making it easier for passengers to move between coaches and helping distribute crowds more evenly.

Safety systems have been upgraded as well. The train is fitted with emergency alarm systems that can be reset externally, allowing faster response without entering the coach. Dedicated evacuation features, including sliding doors and tubular partitions, have been installed to assist passengers during emergencies. Advanced smoke and heat detection systems will alert drivers instantly, enabling quicker action.

Security has also been strengthened with CCTV cameras installed across all coaches. For crew members, the rake includes features such as air-conditioned driving cabs and a Crew Voice and Video Recording System, aimed at improving operational efficiency and monitoring.
