While it isn’t an outright document of citizenship, it is backed by exhaustive background checks involving multiple state and central government agencies. The architecture of the new e-passports is such that it has an embedded antenna and a secure Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) chip containing personal particulars and biometric identifiers.
As of June 2026, legal proof of citizenship in India typically includes a Birth Certificate (for those born after 1987), an official Citizenship Certificate, or a certified National Register of Citizens (NRC) entry.

As many as 14.7 million e-passports have already been issued since their initial rollout last year, now accounting for 10 percent of the total circulating passports. All newly issued documents are now strictly chip-based.
