Where Is Gurukripa in Sion? Address, Timings, Reviews, Things to Try & More

Gurukripa Sion Mumbai

Before multiplex chains served cheese popcorn or now gourmet nachos, Mumbaikars enjoyed A1 Samosa that came straight from Gurukripa’s central kitchen. Loyal customers, nostalgia, secret recipes, and more- people romanticise running a legacy brand in Mumbai. But the truth behind it is way more demanding, with consistency being non-negligible. Similar is the story of one of Mumbai’s iconic and legendary fast food spots, Gurukripa! We relished some of the best dishes here, and here’s our honest review.

What Is Gurukripa Sion Famous For?

Gurukripa’s brand began when the Wadhwa family, who moved to Mumbai following the Partition, began selling freshly fried snacks from a pushcart in Sion. In 1975, they opened their dine-in restaurant and named it Gurukripa. In no time, it turned into a fixture for families, workers, college students, and even Bollywood celebrities.

Legendary celebrities like Raj Kapoor, Dilip Kumar, and Amitabh Bachchan were known admirers of Gurukripa’s gulab jamuns, samosas, and faloodas. Their menu spans everything from early-morning Sindhi breakfast items to late-evening North Indian chaats and thalis. Some of their famous items include Dal Pakwan, Samosa Chole, Pattice Chole, Chole Bhature, Sindhi Sev barfi, Royal Falooda, Sweets, and Chocolate Lassi.

It is famous for its unwavering consistency despite serving thousands of diners daily. The core recipe of most of its dishes, especially the chole gravy and samosa crust, has remained the same for decades.

The brand is loved not only for its food but also for its value for money and lightning-fast turnaround. For years, the brand has resisted exorbitant price hikes. The tokens and services run like clockwork, so getting hot food on the table is a matter of minutes.

What Should I Try At Gurukripa Sion?

We, L& T from unstumbled’s Dine & Dish, decided to visit this iconic restaurant, and here’s what we tried!

1. Dal Pakwan

We tried the Dal Pakwan, and it genuinely blew our minds. The crispy pakwan was served with flavorful dal and a nice, tangy chutney. It was just the perfect mix of flavours and textures.

Cost: INR 100

Rating: 9/10

2. Samosa Chole

T totally loved this combination, but for L, the dish was slightly on the sweeter side. The chole, of course, turns the samosa a bit mushy and soft. So if you don’t like your food mushy, you can order the two separately and enjoy. The combination as such worked really well!

Cost: INR 100

Rating: 8/10

3. Chole Bhature

We decided to try the Chole Bhature on its own. The bhatures were larger than our faces, but the taste was not up to the mark. It had all the right flavors, but it just wasn’t enough to pack that perfect punch for us. Everything felt a little subtle. The bhatures were amazing because they weren’t chewy; instead were perfectly fluffy and were not at all super oily.

Cost: INR 210

Rating: 6/10

Final Thoughts:

  • Food: 3.5/5
  • Service: 4/5
  • Value for Money: 5/5
  • Ambience: 4/5
  • Return Factor: 4/5
