Ganesh Chaturthi Significance
Ganeshotsav celebrations are rooted in the story of Lord Ganesha’s birth. According to Hindu mythology, Goddess Parvati created Ganesha from sandalwood or turmeric (depending on the version) to guard her chambers while she bathed.
When Lord Shiva, her husband, returned home, Ganesha did not grant him access as he did not know of Shiva’s relation with him. Enraged at being denied access to his home, Shiva beheaded the boy in a fit of rage. A grief-stricken Parvati demanded that Shiva restore life in her son.
Shiva commanded his army to bring the head of the first living being they encountered facing north. They returned with an elephant’s head, which Shiva placed on Ganesha’s body, bringing him back to life. Since that day, the deity is lovingly called the Elephant-headed god. He came to be associated with auspicious beginnings, and is always worshipped first before new beginnings and new ventures to remove obstacles.
