As many as 100 flights daily have been cancelled, and the India-North America corridor is the most impacted by these cancellations. Here is why Air India is seeing international flight cancellations at such a scale.

Air India, India’s flag-carrier airline, has announced a major reduction in their international flight frequency. They cited 34% jump in jet fuel prices and mandatory detours around conflict zones as a cause for this. In the FY-2025-2026, the airline reported an INR 22,000 crores in loss.

Why Are The Cuts Happening?

There are two main reasons for the mass cancellations of flights: Longer routes and more expensive fuel. Owing to the ongoing war, airdomes in the Middle East are not operational. This has forced a number of flights to reroute or take longer detours.

The longer routes consume more time, man-power, and fuel. This means that the cost of operations also increases drastically. The high fuel consumption is a double whammy of sorts since the price of Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) has also gone up.

As a result, a number of routes are no longer financially viable. The longer routes, for instance, those connecting the US and Canada to India, are impacted most by this.

What To Expect For Travelers

  • The number of direct flights may be reduced.
  • Flights may get more expensive.
  • Travelers are advised to schedule for any last-minute changes or cancellations in their schedules, just in case.
  • Connecting flights may see an increase.
  • The new India e-Arrival card must be filed 72 hours prior to arrival, or travelers may face penalty.
