When it comes to the most scenic train routes in India, the Palace on Wheels in Rajasthan is nothing short of iconic. This luxurious train, launched in 1982, is celebrated for its royal charm and has been recognized as the World’s Leading Luxury Indian Royal Train. Traveling on the Palace on Wheels is an experience like no other. And now, for the first time in 45 years, the Palace on Wheels will be running in May! This joint initiative by the Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation and Indian Railways will kick off later this month.

Amit Sudarshan, the Chief Public Relations Officer of North Western Railway, shared with the Indian Express that this change marks a significant shift in their operations. “We usually avoid running in May because of the heat, but due to high demand, we’re making this special exception,” he explained. Traditionally, the train operates from September to April, making this May launch a unique opportunity for travelers.

This month, from May 20 to May 25, the Palace on Wheels train will embark on a special six-day journey starting from Delhi Safdarjung. Covering approximately 2,610 km, the route includes stops at Durgapura, Sawai Madhopur, Chittorgarh, Udaipur, and more.
Launched under the Indian Railways’ Bharat Gaurav Train Policy, the train will be designated as number 00290, as outlined in notification NWR/CHG/10/2026 from North Western Railway.

Boasting 22 luxurious coaches, it includes a mix of saloon and dining coaches, premium toiletries, Wi-Fi, a telephone, a locker, as well as uniquely named coaches inspired by various princely states such as Bikaner and Jodhpur.

The original purpose of the coaches was to serve as personal transport for the rulers of various Rajputana states, including Baroda and the Nizam. Palace on Wheels includes 36 Deluxe Cabins, 2 Suite Cabins, 3 Super Deluxe Cabins, and 1 Presidential Suite, all inspired by the rich heritage of Rajasthan.
