When Did Chinchpokli Chintamani Ganpati Mandal Begin?

Chinchpokli Chintamani is one of the oldest public Ganeshotsav celebrations in Mumbai. The Chinchpokli Sarvajanik Utsav Mandal began in 1920 in Mumbai. The celebration was started by local mill workers and residents, inspired by freedom fighter Lokmanya Tilak’s struggle to unite people through public festivals and ultimately foster patriotism that resisted British rule.

In its initial years, the idol was much smaller than its current size. It was only about two to three feet in height compared to today’s size that is close to 23 feet.

The Chinchpokli Chintamani Sarvajanik Utsav Mandal is located in the Chinchpokli area of Mumbai, part of South Mumbai. It is surrounded by the neighborhoods of Byculla, Parel-Lower Parel, and Sewri.

The Ganpati mandal is located on Dattaram Lad Marg, close to the Sane Guruji Marg. It is also in close proximity to the Eastern Express Highway and Chinchpokli Railway Station.

The best way to reach Chinchpokli Cha Chintamani Mandal, especially during Ganeshotsav in Mumbai, is to use the local train.

The nearest railway station to Chinchpokli Chintamani Sarvajanik Utsav Mandal is Chinchpokli Railway Station. The railway station is located at a walking distance of 5 to 10 minutes.

For those unversed with navigating the Mumbai local train, Chinchpokli railway station is part of the Central Line. The railway station is sandwiched between Currey Road and Byculla railway stations on the Central Line map.

Reaching Chinchpokli From Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus

If you’re boarding a train from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), note that it is the terminal station of the Central and Harbour Lines in the Southern end of Mumbai. You must board any of the trains running on the Central Line to reach Chinchpokli station, and it is the fifth stop starting from CSMT. Board a train heading to any of the following destinations from CSMT and alight at Chinchpokli Railway Station:

Reaching Chinchpokli From Western Line

The Western Line starts from Churchgate in South Mumbai extending all the way to Dahanu Road in the northern end of Mumbai. It includes major stops like Parel, Lower Parel, Dadar (Western), Bandra, Andheri, Goregaon, Borivali, and more.

Dadar and Prabhadevi are two railway stations on the Western line that are connected to their respective counterparts on the Central Line. So if you’re traveling on the Western line, you must switch trains at Dadar and Prabhadevi interchanges.

When changing from Dadar:

Step 1: Switch from Dadar (Western) to Dadar (Central)

Step 2: Board a train from Dadar (Central) to Byculla / CSMT and alight at Chinchpokli

When changing from Prabhadevi :

Step 1: Switch from Prabhadevi (Western) to Parel (Central)

Step 2: Board a train from Parel to Byculla / CSMT and alight at Chinchpokli

Reaching Chinchpokli From Harbour Line

The Harbour Line starts from CSMT in the Southern end that bifurcates at Vashi and Sanpada, with one end leading up to Thane and the other end towards Panvel.

If you’re traveling on the Harbour Line, your best bet is to alight at Cotton Green Railway Station and walk for 15-25 minutes or take a cab to Chinchpokli Chintamani Sarvajanik Utsav Mandal. Cotton Green Railway Station is in close proximity to the Chinchpokli neighborhood, so alighting at the railway station is a convenient way of reaching your destination.

Using Aqua Line To Reach Chinchpokli

The newly opened Aqua Line in Mumbai is also a convenient way of reaching Chinchpokli, especially for those living in the western suburbs of Mumbai and those traveling from the Mumbai airport terminals.

The Aqua Line runs between Aarey JVLR and Cuffe Parade and takes about 55 to 60 minutes for a 33.5-km route. We recommend alighting at the Mahalaxmi Metro Station on this line and then taking a cab to reach Chinchpokli Chintamani Mandal. The distance from the metro station to the Ganpati mandal is about 1.7 km to 2.5 km only.

Using The Bus Network To Reach Chinchpokli

The BEST Bus Network is a comfortable and affordable way of transportation in the city. If you’re planning to use this public mode of transport, note that Comrade Gulabrao Ganacharya Chowk and Jaihind Cinema / Voltas House are the two nearest bus stops to Chinchpokli Cha Chintamani Ganpati Mandal. Many bus routes like 44, 63, 66, 2, 14, 134, 22, 7, 8, A-19, A-21, A-25, and more halt at one of the two bus stops and you can reach the destination within 5 to 10 minutes of walking.

However, one must note that frequency and reliability of BEST buses has dwindled recently.
