Kolkata Has An Amitabh Bachchan Temple And No, We’re Not Clickbaiting!

Amitabh Bachchan Temple

Kolkata is home to a number of temples – and when reading that statement, your mind might immediately conjure images of Kali temples, old shrines tucked into neighborhood lanes or grand places of worship steeped in centuries of history. But there is one temple in the city where the person being worshipped is not a deity from mythology. Neither it is a forgotten deity or a saint. It is none other than Bollywood’s very own “Shahenshah”, Amitabh Bachchan!

Located in Tiljala in south Kolkata, Bachchan Dham is a temple-cum-museum dedicated to the legendary Bollywood actor. And before you assume this is just another internet myth doing the rounds, the temple is very real. It has a statue of Amitabh Bachchan, devotees, prayers and even rituals. In other words, Kolkata has taken celebrity fandom to a rather literal level.

What Is The Bachchan Dham?

The Bachchan Dham is run by the All Bengal Amitabh Bachchan Fans’ Association. Yes, that is an official, registered association!

The temple is tucked away on Shree Dhar Roy Road in the Kustia area of Tiljala, south Kolkata. The association has been associated with the temple and fan activities for decades, with the shrine itself established in the early 2000s. A life-size statue of Bachchan came recently, in 2017.

Step inside and it becomes clear that the place is less of a temple and more of a museum dedicated to one of the country’s most recognizable faces, Amitabh Bachchan.

What’s Inside The Amitabh Bachchan Temple?

Step foot inside the Amitabh Bachchan temple and you’ll find yourself surrounded by Big B in various forms! Over the years, the space has accumulated memorabilia connected to Bachchan’s films and career. Reports have documented photographs covering the interiors and footwear associated with the actor’s films being preserved and displayed at the temple.

The walls are filled with his photographs, right from his prime time days in the 70s and 80s to more recent photographs. At the center is a statue of the actor, presented in the unmistakable style of his Sarkar character, complete with his signature stern expression and an elaborate throne.

For Bollywood fans, therefore, the experience is less about simply ticking off an unusual attraction and more about seeing how one actor’s decades-long cultural impact has been interpreted by his most devoted admirers.

So, Do People Actually Pray To Amitabh Bachchan?

Yes, people pray at the Amitabh Bachchan temple. The association’s members, led by Sanjay Patodia, have long treated Bachchan not merely as a film star but as an inspiration and, for some devotees, a guru-like figure. Patodia himself considers himself to be a devotee of Big B and not just a regular fan.

There are daily prayers and aarti held at the temple, while the actor’s birthday and other special occasions are celebrated with additional festivities.

On his birthdays, celebrations have included garlanding the statue, performing aarti and cutting a cake. The fan association also organizes social initiatives in Bachchan’s name, including blood donation camps, clothing distribution and assistance during difficult times.

That combination of fandom and community work is perhaps what makes Bachchan Dham more interesting than simply calling it a celebrity temple.
