There are many accounts of why Gauri Avahan is celebrated, and these two are the most well-known ones.
The first account is centered around the mother-son relationship of Parvati and Ganesha. Parvati herself is said to arrive at her son’s house to meet him in the form of Gauri Avahan. She stays as a customary guest in the house for three days – arriving on the first, being worshipped and fed on the second, and leaving on the third. The emotional bond of the mother-son duo forms the epicenter of Ganeshotsav celebrations in Maharashtra.
The second account is rooted in a Puranic story. It tells the story of asuras tormenting married women until they plead with Goddess Mahalakshmi on Bhadrapada Shukla Ashtami. The goddess, listening to their pleas, destroyed the asuras. As a form of gratitude and respect, married women began worshipping her every year on these days.

Gauri Avahan 2026 Rituals
Gauri Avahan traditionally falls on the third or fourth day of Ganesh Chaturthi festivities. On this day, the house is cleaned, and small designs resembling footprints are drawn leading from the main doorway. A dedicated space near the Ganpati idol is allocated for the goddess, cleaned, and decorated.
A married woman (there can be exceptions) carries the Gauri masks or idols from outside into the house and pauses at the threshold, the kitchen, and the safe, almirah, or cupboard – in the belief that Gauri blesses the food, water, and the wealth of the household she’s entering.
Many households sing devotional songs praising and welcoming the arrival of the goddess before she’s placed in her allocated area. What is interesting is that the goddess always arrives in a pair – Jyeshtha and Kanishtha. Considered to be the manifestations of Gauri herself, they are two sisters, with Jyeshtha being the elder one and Kanishtha the younger one. They are then decorated with what is traditionally known as ‘16 shringaar’ – essentially items like bangles, a pinch of vermillion (kumkum), jewelry, and more.
Then the women of the house conduct rituals and perform an aarti, singing their praises. Over the course of her stay in the house, the goddess is offered a variety of food offerings. In some parts of Maharashtra and Goa, the goddess is also offered non-vegetarian food offerings!
