Tamil Nadu: New Coaching Depot Sanctioned At Velankanni Station

Major infrastructure development is on its way to the coastal town of Velankanni in Nagapattinam district. This is a railway-related infrastructure development that will be carried out for INR 49.98 crore.  The Railway Board in New Delhi has sanctioned the creation of a new coaching depot at the Velankanni Railway Station. The development of this new coaching depot is sanctioned with sick line, pit line, stabling line, and shunting line facilities. Here’s everything you must know about this new development. 

Creation Of New Coaching Depot At Velankanni Station

A couple of days ago, an official communication from the Railway Board was sent to the Southern Railway General Manager. This official communication was basically the board sending their approval for this major project. As per the communication sent, this work will be executed under “Development / Upgradation of maintenance facilities for rolling stocks ( LHB Push Pull/ LHB)”. 

After Tiruchi and Villupuram railway junctions, Velankanni will become the third railway station in Tiruchirappalli Division to have a coaching depot with the needed infrastructure. The Tiruchirappalli Railway Division had proposed the development of a new pit line with various facilities needed for maintaining the coaching stock. That also included a stabling line for the growing demand for operating additional trains in the delta region. This will cover districts like Tiruvarur, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, and Karaikal. 

This project also has a second phase, which includes additional pit lines and stabling lines. It includes three more stabling lines and covered sheds for both the pit lines. The pit lines will undertake maintenance of contemporary sets and modern rolling stock.

Additional Train Services In The Delta Region

The upcoming infrastructure development will ease the introduction of additional train services in the delta region. This will provide a boost to tourism as well. The project will play an important part in enhancing passenger convenience as well as strengthening railway infrastructure in the delta region. 

The railway service users in Velankanni and Nagapattinam towns are happy about this approval. The reason is that they have been waiting for such facilities at Velankanni. Velankanni is a well-known major pilgrimage centre as well as a tourist spot that attracts devotees from across the country. It has been a terminal station for some weekly, bi-weekly and daily express trains.

Summing Up

The Railway Board, New Delhi, sanctions a coach depot at Velankanni station at a cost of INR 48.96 crore. It will have covered shed (maintenance and repair), pit lines and stabling lines.
