Located 14 km from the main city and 16 km from the railway station of Dehradun is this picturesque cascade. Sahastradhara translates as Thousand-Folds Of Spring and is also called the Sulphur Springs. It’s one of the most famed tourist attractions in Dehradun as people from across the world come to take a dip in the medicinal water here. What makes this place even more special is the serene Himalayan vegetation and caves that surround the cascade.

The waterfall is called Sulphur Springs because of the collection of water pools that are formed as a result of water gushing down from a height of 30 ft. Water drips here from limestone stalactites that are rich in sulfur.

You might even catch a cold after diving in this water because it’s oh-so-cold, but trust us, it’s worth it! The refreshing energy that runs up your body after the dip is unmatchable and is believed to have healing properties.

If you aren’t a water baby and want to visit the waterfall only because it’s on your Dehradun 2-day itinerary, don’t worry, you won’t get bored. You can experience the fun ropeway ride that’ll let you see the incredible overview of the Sahastradhara Falls.

Timings: 8:00 am – 7:00 pm

Robber’s Cave/Guchhupani

Moving ahead, let’s visit Guchhupani or Robber’s Caves. Situated close to the Sahastradhara Falls, this cave is a 600 m long natural cave. Mythologically, it’s believed to be the abode of Lord Shiva where he meditated. Historically, the cave is called the Robber’s Cave because it was believed to be the hideout for robbers during British rule.

Recollect the scene from Journey To The Center Of The Earth where the trio discovers a mystic river surrounded by beautiful elements. Now that you have, it’ll be easier for you to imagine this Guchhupani cave that’s surrounded by dark limestones with torrential waters. If you’re unable to find the right word to express your state of mind here, let us help– pure bliss!

Another reason for you to visit the caves is the mystery added to it. The streams here are believed to vanish after every few meters of trek and reappear when you need water (Mother Nature mothering at her best!).

Timings: 7:00 am – 6:00 pm

Tapovan Temple

We’re just 5 kms from the city now but let’s visit one last place before we enter the city– the famous Tapovan Temple. The name Tapovan comes from two Sanskrit words– Tapas meaning penance and Van meaning forest. The temple got its name when Dronacharya, a great sage and teacher in the Hindu epic Mahabharata did penance here.

Surrounded by lush greenery and situated on the banks of the river Ganga, this temple is known to release your worldly tensions and invoke a sense of calm and satisfaction in you. The energy in this temple, induced by various chants and rituals, is the biggest reason for you to visit. Devotees gather here in large numbers on a quest to find their inner peace. You can also participate in yoga courses to be healthier in both the mind and body.

Timings: 6.00 am – 8.00 pm

Mall Road

Let’s get done with shopping on Day 1 so the chaos of switching between dozens of shops doesn’t come in the way of enjoying your trip. Located just 3.5 km from the railway station, Mall Road is one of the busiest streets in Dehradun. This colonial relic with benches and lampposts is filled with shops, salons, video game parlors, and skating rinks– basically, your one-stop shop in the city.

Although you’ll find everything here, shop for Tibetan carpets, blankets, Garhwali shawls, other products like wooden bangles, traditional jewelry, dry fruits, and traditional embroidered garments that are a speciality here. Another reason why you should visit Mall Road is for the chance to run into celebrity author Ruskin Bond who is often seen casually strolling around the streets!

Places To Visit On Day 2

  1. Tapkeshwar Temple
  2. Wadia Institute Of Himalayan Geology
  3. Subir Raha Oil Museum
  4. Tibetan Buddhist Temple/Mindrolling Monastery

Tapkeshwar Temple

Let’s begin Day 2 of our trip by visiting a temple. Located 6.5 km from the Dehradun Railway Station, the Tapkeshwar Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva is nestled deep inside the natural Drona Cave. Religion, mystery, or architecture– pick your reason to visit because this place is well known for all three. But first, let’s understand how the temple came to be named. Tapak is a Hindi word referring to a water drop that trickles from the ceiling of the cave and falls over the Shivalinga continuously. The water drops eventually form a stream outside of the cave. This phenomenon is a slow spectacle to watch.

There are two Shivalingas here, both believed to be manifested by the Lord himself. Carrying the legend, it’s also believed that wishes are granted here. You’ll also find pilgrims bathing in the sulfur springs here before entering the temple. The only accessible way to the temple is a short but fun trek that you can partake in with the local youth who often visit the Tapkeshwar Temple.

However, the best time to visit this temple is during Shivratri when the locales host the famous Tapkeshwar Mela. It’s a small local affair where people visit the temple to seek blessings and offer sweets to the deity.

Subir Raha Oil Museum

We’ll save you the hassle of reaching this museum, just ask your cab to drive you to the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) premises. Located in Tel Bhawan is the famous Subir Raha Oil Museum.

Here you’ll learn about the history of petroleum in India and the process of conservation of fossil fuels. The entire museum is divided into 3 sections to ease the process for visitors so they can understand everything in depth. And if you think a visit to an oil museum is a boring activity to add to an itinerary, that’s about to change, with the audio-video room that provides an immersive experience.

Nestled amid the foothills of the Himalayas, this is one of the largest Buddhist Centers in India which attracts visitors across countries. This monastery is truly an architectural masterpiece with multiple sections. You’ll find peace not just because it’s a monastery but because of the serene gardens surrounding it.
