What Is The Story Of Shani Jayanti?

Shani Jayanti

The story of Lord Shani has a particularly tragic beginning. He’s the son of Lord Surya and Goddess Chhaaya, the shadow of Goddess Sanjna. Goddess Sanjna left Chhaaya Devi in her place because she couldn’t bear the scorching heat of Lord Surya.

When Goddess Chhaaya became pregnant with Lord Shani, she had to undergo intense penance under Lord Surya’s scorching heat. Owing to this, Lord Shani was born with a dark complexion. His complexion made Lord Surya question his paternity of the child.

So, when he looked at Lord Shani, it was with an intense disgust. However, Lord Shani was enraged by the taunts of Lord Surya, and he, in turn, looked at Lord Surya with so much wrath that the sun went into an eclipse.

Only after Lord Shiva’s intervention was Lord Shani’s anger appeased, and Lord Surya was forced to acknowledge his parentage, along with Lord Shani being the arbiter of justice.

What Are The Essential Rituals And Puja Vidhi

There are quite a few things you must follow in a disciplined manner. They are as follows:

Start Early: Having an early start to the day is crucial for harnessing the full potential of the day. Wake up during the Brahma Muhurat or before the sun rises. Take a bath and wear dark colours like black or dark blue.

Tailabhishekam: Offer mustard oil to the idol of Lord Shani Bhagwan. Many devotees even give the stone idol a bath of mustard oil.

The Peepal Tree Ritual: Many devotees also light a mustard oil diya and place it underneath a Peepal tree in the evening. They also offer black til (sesame seeds) there.

Chanting: Recite the Shani Beejh Mantra 108 times. It goes: Om Praam Preem Proum Sah Shanaishcharaya Namah.

Reciting Hanuman Chalisa: Lord Shani favors Lord Hanuman, and therefore, reciting the Hanuman Chalisa is also considered auspicious on this day.

It is important to note that no matter what, you’re not supposed to look at Lord Shani directly. His gaze is considered to be so powerful that if anyone stares at his eyes, they immediately get all the negative karma due to them.
