India’s First Commercial Seaplane Service

India is all set to witness a major shift in its aviation transportation for tourism. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has recently given its nod to the commercial seaplane startup, SkyHop Aviation, to launch India’s first commercial seaplane service. This will transform connectivity for underserved and remote regions of the country. If successful, it is likely that the seaplane services may be expanded to other areas as well.

Lakshadweep, the picturesque archipelago and a popular tourist destination, is all set to enhance its connectivity. The DGCA has greenlighted the launch of the first commercial seaplane service in India, which will connect Lakshadweep and its islands.

The initial phase of this launch will connect as many as five islands in this union territory. In addition to this, the service will connect the union territory to the mainland, likely via Kochi in Kerala.

The seaplane service is all set to cut travel time and boost tourism while minimally impacting the environment of Lakshadweep. It will also improve connectivity in the underserved and remote areas of the union territory.

SkyHop will deploy a De Havilland Canada DHC-6 Twin Otter. This is quite a globally-proven 19-seater amphibious plane and is quite reliable and safe. Successful test flights have been conducted at the Tehri Lake and Ganga Barrage near Haridwar.

Why Seaplane Connectivity Is Better In Remote Areas

As one might imagine, Lakshadweep is environmentally delicate, and hence, building a full-fledged airport here is not feasible. Seaplanes do not require the expansive infrastructure that regular airplanes require. Hence, they are a better, more environmentally friendly option for places like Lakshadweep.

Moreover, seaplanes are also better for short distances and therefore make for a great connectivity option for linking islands within this union territory.
