Dine & Dish: We Relished Authentic Punjabi Flavors At Khane Khas

khane khas review

Mumbai is home to many legendary eateries that have catered to Mumbaikars’ taste buds. They are called legendary for their amazing consistency in quality and taste over the years, which has made people fall in love with the food served here over and over again. One such legendary, family-run culinary institution is Khane Khas.

So after so many new and iconic restaurants and cafes in Mumbai, T took L to Khane Khas, which has been her all-time favourite for years now. Let’s see if it passes the hype test as part of unstumbled’s Dine & Dish series.

In the Dine and Dish series, we explore various restaurants and provide honest recommendations on whether you should dine there.

Here’s our unfiltered and honest review of Khane Khas, Bandra West.

About Khane Khas

Khane Khas is not just an eatery; it is a journey that began in 1989 with four individuals who came together to offer something authentic to foodies. They have stayed away from the traditional marketing gimmickery and instead focused on serving people the best quality of food. The result was people visiting the place solely through word of mouth, and the place becoming the talk of the town in no time.

It is widely celebrated for its authentic, rich Punjabi and Mughlai cuisine. They have earned a massive loyal following by delivering Delhi-style Punjabi comfort food. Loyal patrons love the succulent kebabs, tikkas, Roomali rotis, Kali Dal, Bhurji rolls, and other offerings. The place is simple, open-air, with no fancy decor but delicious food for sure.

Khane Khas Bandra Food Review

Stuffed Tandoori Mushroom

Whole mushrooms are hollowed and filled with spiced vegetable filling and some cheese. T is not a big fan of vegetarian food, but this dish is the reason why she orders vegetarian dishes here at Khane Khas. L found it a bit too easy for her preference, but she surely loved the seasoning and the filling. We basically found this Stuffed Tandoori Mushroom very tasty, and a must-try if you come to this legendary spot.

Tangdi Kebab

Chicken appetizers are marinated in a spiced cream or yogurt mixture and then grilled until juicy and tender. The kebabs were nice and juicy, with the flavors penetrating deep inside the chicken, making it more delicious and succulent. I totally loved it!

Paneer Tikka

Paneer Tikka is one of the most loved Indian appetizers, and we had to try it. The paneer was soft, nicely flavored, creamy, and well-coated. It probably wasn’t the best Paneer Tikka we have ever had, but it was surely not the worst. This Paneer Tikka was good.

Punjabi Mutton Sukka

No Punjabi delicacy trail will ever be complete without trying Punjabi Mutton Sukka. The mutton was soft, tender, and juicy. It was perfectly flavored, making us dream of going to Punjab and eating sugarcane in the fields. Yes, it did teleport us to Punjab! It also made T nostalgic, reminding her of the mutton that her grandma cooks.

Final Thoughts: Dine Or Dish?

Was it really worth the hype? Well, we paid INR 1,870 for this meal and some extras, and we think it was totally worth it. The food tasted authentically Punjabi, so much so that L felt like Kajol from DDLJ. So if you too are a fan of Punjabi food or want to try authentic dishes, Khane Khas can surely be your spot! This place is surely another proof that you do not have to visit a fancy restaurant to relish good, delicious food.
