Flying can often be a fast and convenient way to travel, allowing you to reach your destination quickly. However, long-haul flights – especially in Economy class can become quite challenging, as sitting for extended periods can take its toll on comfort. However, now, Air New Zealand, a major airline, is gearing up to change this experience. Air New Zealand is set to introduce the world’s first in-flight sleep pods, called Economy Skynest.
Scheduled for launch on select ultra-long-haul journeys between New York and Auckland, these innovative sleep pods will be available for booking starting May 18, with travel commencing in November 2026. Featuring six individual lie-flat nests, Economy Skynest caters to both Economy and Premium Economy travelers, providing a dedicated space for rest. Passengers can reserve a four-hour session for a peaceful mid-flight retreat, leaving standard seating behind.
What To Know About Air New Zealand’s In-Flight Sleep Pods
Each pod measures approximately 203 centimeters (6.6 feet) in length and varies in width, providing ample room for comfort. Reservations for the Skynest can be made in addition to your seat, with sessions scheduled outside of meal times and limited to one session per passenger per flight. You must also know that this offering is available for travelers aged 15 and older.
Getting in and out of the pod requires some agility, as it may involve bending or crawling, especially since the top and middle nests are elevated while the bottom ones are at floor level for easier access.
The Skynest will be featured on Air New Zealand’s Boeing 787-9 aircraft and promises a cozy environment with a full-sized pillow, fresh linens, and a blanket provided for each session.
A mesh curtain within each nest helps create a sense of privacy, complemented by adjustable ambient lighting for relaxation. Passengers can also conveniently charge their devices with USB-A and USB-C ports provided in each pod, ensuring a restful and rejuvenating journey.
