Agatsu: A Free Community Center in Bandra

Agatsu, a free community centre in Mumbai, has been designed to create an environment outside of home and work where anyone can walk in, be themselves, with no baggage of labels or criteria required at all. It walks away from the clinical environment with a physical, holistic community space.

The centre operates on a strong belief that healing happens at its own pace and that it is different for every individual. Whether you are actively seeking emotional support or just want to escape the overwhelming energy of the city, this centre is free for you to walk in with many free resources.

Founder of Agatsu, Ira Khan, went through depression herself and wanted to come up with a space to help others who are suffering through the same. The idea was to make sure that it is completely free of cost because she wanted everyone to benefit from it. She believes that while digital support was rising, she felt the need for an in-person sanctuary was non-negotiable.

Agatsu operates as a Section 8 non-profit organisation. This ensures all the surplus funds are poured back into the organisation rather than into directors’ pockets.

What Can You Do At Agatsu?

You do not need any appointments or bookings to visit Agatsu! Individuals can walk in anytime to join free community spaces, use their creative spaces, participate in peer conversations, or simply sit in the library to read.  No individual will be asked about any medical history or diagnosis here.

If you wish to talk about something that has been bothering you but do not want to go for formal therapy, the centre has trained volunteers on-site. These listeners will listen to you for 20 straight minutes without any interruptions, judgments, or advice-giving. Also, rest assured that this one-on-one conversation will be completely confidential.

Agatsu also hosts structured peer support spaces where people from different walks of life come together. Here, they share their lived experiences to listen and realize that they are not alone.

While this community centre is a free open-door space, it also addresses the financial barrier to professional mental health. To manage the high costs of mental healthcare in Mumbai, Agatsu employs a Stepped-Care Approach. It follows the Healthy Activity Programme (HAP), which is a short-term, high-impact intervention. Their Therapy Clinic offers evidence-based, in-person therapy sessions on a sliding scale between INR 50 and INR 750 per session.

The centre also has a Learning Studio, which, unlike the medical community, does not overcomplicate the term mental health. It helps in translating the jargon or complicated terms into everyday simple language for individuals to understand better.  It also hosts various offline events where people can explore mental health tools and understand wellness ideas.

Why Mumbai Needs A Space Like Agatsu?

Conversations around mental health only happen in moments of crisis- well, only extreme crisis, that too within the four walls of a clinic, which tends to get intimidating. But everyone needs to understand that everyday well-being is shaped way before any crisis hits. It is important to fight realities like urban isolation with a safe space where individuals can express themselves without any fear of judgement.

Agatsu was launched to fill this exact gap of having a third home in the City of Dreams. It wishes to focus completely on community-rooted support and preventive care in order to make mental health a normal conversation.
