8 Things That Are Surprisingly Expensive In Dubai

Dubai is known for luxury, but expensive hotels, designer shopping, and supercars are hardly going to surprise anyone. Some of the things that are surprisingly expensive in Dubai are actually the much simpler parts of a short visit. Breakfast at the hotel, a couple of cocktails, an afternoon at a beach club, or even popcorn and a drink at the cinema can sometimes cost far more than expected. These smaller expenses are easy to overlook when planning a stopover because most travelers naturally focus first on flights, hotels, and major attractions.

That does not mean Dubai has to be expensive throughout. Public beaches, public transportation, affordable restaurants, and free attractions offer plenty of ways to keep Dubai stopover costs down. How much you eventually spend depends heavily on the experiences you choose, where you eat and drink, and how you get around. Knowing where seemingly ordinary expenses can suddenly become costly makes it much easier to put together a realistic budget before arriving.

Is Dubai Really Expensive For Tourists?

How expensive Dubai feels depends heavily on the way you travel. There is a major difference between spending an afternoon at a public beach and booking a cabana at a Palm Jumeirah beach club, just as there is a big difference between grabbing breakfast from a local café and eating at a luxury resort every morning. In the same way, a traveler using the Metro, choosing casual restaurants, and mixing paid attractions with free sightseeing will have a very different daily spend from someone relying on taxis, hotel restaurants, beach clubs, and ticketed attractions.

This is why a realistic Dubai travel budget needs to go beyond flights and accommodation. Meals, drinks, transportation, attractions, and entertainment can collectively add a considerable amount to the final bill, particularly when several premium experiences are packed into the same trip. That is also why some of these costs do not necessarily feel like luxury purchases when you first make them.

Which Everyday Things Can Be Surprisingly Expensive In Dubai?

1. Alcoholic Drinks

Going out for a couple of drinks might sound like a fairly ordinary vacation expense, but prices can climb quickly at Dubai’s licensed hotel bars and upscale rooftops. At The Bar at Hyatt Regency Dubai, Stella Artois, Budweiser, and Peroni are listed at AED 56 each, approximately INR 1,460 per bottle. Prices are higher at some luxury venues, with Mercury Rooftop at Four Seasons Resort Dubai at Jumeirah Beach listing beers such as Corona, Asahi, and Peroni at AED 75 (around INR 1,960). Signature cocktails cost AED 85 (approximately INR 2,220), while alcohol-free cocktails cost AED 70 (approximately INR 1,830).

Two people ordering two AED 85 cocktails each would spend AED 340, or roughly INR 8,880, without ordering any food. That can turn what initially sounded like a casual evening drink into a noticeable vacation expense. Even so, these examples come from prominent hotel and rooftop venues and should not be treated as standard alcohol prices throughout Dubai. They still demonstrate just how much location and the type of establishment can influence what you pay.

2. Spending A Day At A Beach Club

You do not have to spend thousands of rupees to enjoy the beach in Dubai because the city has public beaches. The cost changes considerably when you opt for the private beach club experience, where reserved sunbeds, cabanas, resort surroundings, food, drinks, and other amenities are included in the day. At Bohemia Beach Club at FIVE Palm Jumeirah, a Friday-to-Sunday Beach Day Pass costs AED 150 per person (approximately INR 3,920), while a VIP sunbed costs AED 250 (approximately INR 6,530). A cabana is AED 350 per person, approximately INR 9,150.

For two people, even the AED 150 option costs AED 300 (approximately INR 7,840), while the AED 350 option costs AED 700 (approximately INR 18,290). Some of these amounts can be redeemed for food and beverages, depending on the package terms, so it is not necessarily an additional charge simply for sitting by the beach. Still, it shows how a beach day can become one of the larger Dubai tourist expenses when you choose a private club instead of a public beach.

3. Breakfast At A Luxury Hotel

Breakfast can feel like one of the smaller meals to budget for during a vacation, but eating it at a luxury Dubai hotel can change that calculation considerably. The breakfast buffet at Jou Jou Brasserie at Four Seasons Resort Dubai at Jumeirah Beach costs AED 195 per adult, approximately INR 5,100. Ordering à la carte is not necessarily inexpensive either. Two eggs cost AED 75 (around INR 1,960). Eggs Benedict costs AED 90 (around INR 2,350), and a full English breakfast costs AED 105 (around INR 2,745).

There are even more expensive examples. At Gastronomy at Atlantis The Royal, breakfast is listed at AED 315 per person, approximately INR 8,230. Two adults eating there would therefore spend AED 630, or around INR 16,460, on breakfast alone. Even so, these are luxury-resort examples rather than typical breakfast prices throughout the city, and independent restaurants, cafés, and bakeries can be substantially cheaper. The surprise is simply how much eating breakfast at your hotel can add to the daily budget when you are staying at a high-end property.

4. Tourist Attractions And Their Extras

Major ticketed tourist attractions can take a sizeable portion of the sightseeing budget, especially when several are included in the same itinerary. A standard one-day ticket to MOTIONGATE Dubai starts at AED 295 per person, approximately INR 7,710. For two people paying that starting price, admission alone would cost AED 590, or around INR 15,420, before transportation, food, drinks, merchandise, or anything else purchased during the visit.

The admission ticket is also not always the only expense travelers need to consider. Major attractions can offer photographs, premium experiences, upgraded access, food packages, merchandise, and other optional additions that increase the final cost of the day. So booking online in advance and checking for combination tickets, packages, and promotions can sometimes reduce the amount you spend. Dubai also has plenty of free and inexpensive sightseeing, so it is worth balancing these experiences rather than filling every day with paid attractions.

5. Relying On Taxis For Your Entire Holiday

Dubai taxis might initially appear relatively inexpensive because the starting fares are low. Regular street-hailed taxis start at AED 5 during the day and AED 5.50 at night, while regular airport taxis start at AED 20. App-booked taxi fares can vary with time and demand, and applicable Salik toll charges may also be added to a passenger’s fare. A single taxi ride, therefore, is not necessarily one of the city’s biggest expenses.

The bigger consideration is how often you use them and how far you travel. Dubai is geographically spread out, with Old Dubai, Downtown Dubai, Palm Jumeirah, and Dubai Marina located across different parts of the city. That means several longer journeys on the same sightseeing day can gradually make transportation a significant part of the overall cost of traveling in Dubai. Combining taxis with the Dubai Metro and other forms of public transportation can be a more practical approach than automatically taking a taxi for every journey.

6. A Simple Night Out

Sometimes the surprise is not how much a particular cocktail or plate of food costs, but how much you are expected to spend at the venue in the first place. Minimum-spend requirements can turn what was meant to be a simple night out into a considerably larger expense. At Luna Dubai at Four Seasons Hotel DIFC, the minimum spend from 8 PM onward is AED 300 per person, approximately INR 7,840 for two people; that translates into a combined minimum spend of AED 600, or around INR 15,680.

Its menu provides some context for how quickly that amount can be reached. Truffle fries cost AED 65 (approximately INR 1,700), salmon maki costs AED 140 (approximately INR 3,660), and Kobe sliders cost AED 205 (approximately INR 5,360). Even so, minimum-spend policies are not universal across Dubai’s restaurants and bars. Still, they are something worth checking when making reservations at upscale rooftops and lounges, particularly if the plan is to order one drink and enjoy the view.

7. Dubai’s Famous Weekend Brunches

Visitors unfamiliar with Dubai’s dining culture might hear “brunch” and imagine a relaxed late breakfast with coffee, eggs, and perhaps pancakes. Dubai’s famous weekend brunches can be something completely different, often involving several hours of food, beverages, and sometimes entertainment. At The Thai Kitchen at Dubai Creek Resort, the Sawasdee Sunday Brunch costs AED 245 per person with soft beverages (approximately INR 6,400). In contrast, the package with house beverages costs AED 400 per person (approximately INR 10,450).

At Sheraton Jumeirah Beach Resort, brunch is listed at AED 299 with soft beverages and AED 499 with house beverages, approximately INR 7,815 and INR 13,040 per adult, respectively. At the AED 499 rate, two adults would spend AED 998, or around INR 26,080. Even so, these are multi-hour dining experiences rather than ordinary breakfast buffets, so comparing them directly with a café brunch would be misleading. What can still surprise first-time visitors is just how different the meaning, scale, and potential cost of “going for brunch” can be in Dubai.

8. Cinema Snacks And Theme Park Food

Popcorn, soft drinks, and quick meals are easy expenses to overlook when working out a vacation budget, but they can add up quickly during days of entertainment. At VOX Cinemas UAE, a small popcorn costs AED 18 (approximately INR 470), while a large costs AED 20 (approximately INR 525). A large soft drink costs another AED 20, meaning a large popcorn and large drink together come to AED 40, approximately INR 1,045, a nachos supreme combo with popcorn and a soft drink costs AED 53, or around INR 1,385.

Theme park food can be similarly expensive as a beef burger combo at MOTIONGATE costs AED 45 (approximately INR 1,175), while a slush combo costs AED 40 (approximately INR 1,045). At Real Madrid World, a Margherita pizza with a soft drink is listed at AED 62, approximately INR 1,620. None of these purchases is enormous on its own, but a family buying several drinks, snacks, and meals during a full day out can end up adding a substantial amount to what they have already spent on admission.

What Other Dubai Expenses Can Catch Travelers Off Guard?

Family attraction days deserve special attention because a manageable individual ticket price looks very different once several tickets are required. A one-day MOTIONGATE ticket starts at AED 295 per person, meaning four tickets at the starting price would cost AED 1,180, approximately INR 30,840. Four AED 45 burger combos would add another AED 180, or roughly INR 4,700. Actual costs will depend on ticket types, ages, promotions, packages, and what a family chooses to purchase during the day.

Parking can also become unexpectedly expensive when a vehicle is left at Dubai Mall for an unusually long period. The mall provides complimentary parking in designated paid areas, but its published tariff eventually reaches AED 500 (approximately INR 13,065) for more than 12 hours and AED 1,000 (approximately INR 26,130) for 24 hours. Most visitors obviously will not leave their car there for an entire day, but the figures show how sharply the tariff can increase during an exceptionally long stay.

How Can You Keep Your Dubai Travel Budget Under Control?

Keeping costs manageable does not mean avoiding every expensive experience. Instead, decide which experiences actually matter enough to pay for and balance them with less expensive alternatives. A private beach club day could be followed by a public beach day, while a luxury hotel breakfast need not be part of every morning. The same approach works with restaurants, entertainment, and attractions, allowing you to enjoy some of Dubai’s premium experiences without treating every part of the vacation as a splurge.

Transportation and planning can make a difference as well. Combining taxis with public transportation, comparing attraction packages before purchasing individual tickets, and checking minimum-spend requirements before reserving a rooftop or lounge can prevent avoidable surprises. Individually, these decisions may not save an enormous amount, but repeated across several days they can make a noticeable difference when planning for a cheap Dubai trip.

Which Dubai Expenses Should You Budget For Before Your Trip?

Flights and accommodation are usually the first expenses travelers calculate, but everyday spending deserves its own allowance. Meals, local transportation, attraction tickets, drinks, snacks, and entertainment can collectively become a significant part of the vacation budget, particularly when several people are traveling together. Setting aside money for these costs before arriving also makes it easier to decide where to spend more.

It can help to keep premium experiences in a separate part of the budget rather than mixing them with everyday costs. Brunches, beach clubs, theme parks, and upscale nights out are easier to manage when their approximate prices are considered in advance rather than treated as spontaneous additions. That leaves more room to enjoy the experiences you actually want without being caught off guard by smaller expenses throughout the trip.

Author’s Note

The prices and examples in this article have been compiled predominantly from official, first-party sources, including Dubai RTA, Dubai Mall, Four Seasons, Atlantis, Hyatt, Marriott, FIVE Palm Jumeirah, VOX Cinemas, and Dubai Parks and Resorts. Official menus, ticket pages, parking information, and venue policies were used to verify the costs mentioned wherever available. Since prices, packages, and promotions can change, travelers should check the latest information directly with each venue before visiting.

Summing Up

Some of the most surprisingly expensive things in Dubai are not supercars, designer stores, or extravagant hotel suites. They are expenses that sound relatively ordinary until you see the price, from breakfast and popcorn to taxis and a few drinks at a rooftop bar. None of these examples mean travelers should avoid those experiences, but knowing the potential cost beforehand makes it much easier to decide where the money is best spent.

A cocktail can cost more than INR 2,000 at an upscale venue, breakfast at a luxury hotel can exceed INR 5,000 per person, and popcorn with a soft drink can cross INR 1,000. These prices do not represent every establishment in Dubai, but they show why smaller everyday expenses deserve a place in the budget alongside hotels, flights, and major attractions.
