On Sunday, in a pleasant surprise for many, pockets of Mumbai received showers. This marks the first pre-monsoon rain in Mumbai, and it brought some temporary relief from the sweltering heat and humidity of May. The rain was witnessed in the eastern pockets of Mumbai, like Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) and Chembur. However, despite this minimal relief, the arrival of the actual monsoon has been delayed, if official forecasts are to be believed.

It is also important to note that the arrival of the southwest monsoon in Mumbai has been delayed. It was initially predicted to arrive by May 31. However, now, forecasts suggest that it will not arrive until June 6, 2026.
The reason for this delay is chalked up to the slow transition of El Niño conditions across the Pacific. This has disrupted the early wind patterns and has subsequently delayed the arrival of the southwest Kerala monsoon in Mumbai.
