The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) is undergoing a major sanitation overhaul and has made an announcement that has received mixed reactions from the public. In order to fund the sanitation of buses and bus stands, the MSRDC is levying a surcharge of INR 2. This surcharge came into force on April 15, 2026, and is applicable even for senior citizens. However, free toilets will be provided under this overhaul, and the prices for breakfast will be capped at INR 40. The MSRTC cleanliness surcharge has consequently seen mixed reactions.

ToggleMSRTC Cleanliness Surcharge: INR 2 For Bus Sanitation

A mandatory INR 2 will now be added to every ST bus ticket. The rule also includes senior citizens, citizens over 75 for whom bus travel is free, in its purview. However, this surcharge will not apply to students.
The telos behind this surcharge is to raise enough funds to hire private agencies for maintaining the sanitation of buses. If reports are to go by, these agencies will be responsible for cleaning the buses every four hours, as well as prior to each departure.
Other Important Updates For Travelers

Another significant update is that, starting from June 1, 2026, the pay-and-use toilet system will be abolished. All toilets will be free for all passengers to use. In addition to this, all MSRTC Canteens will only be allowed to charge up to INR 40 for tea and breakfast. Furthermore, the price of Nathjal water bottles will be capped at INR 15.
What is more, bibliophiles with a penchant for buses can now expect a more pleasant waiting experience. Free, open-access libraries in the waiting areas of the bus stand are to be seen soon. Two libraries have already been sanctioned. One is at Saswad, and the other is at Baramati.
