UPI Goes Global: Indian Travellers Can Now Pay Seamlessly In Qatar Using UPI

Qatar

The Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has revolutionized the way we handle transactions, eliminating the need for cash-filled wallets. Now, all you need is a smartphone, an internet connection, and a UPI app for convenient payments on the go. UPI has gained immense popularity in India, making payment processes much easier for users. However, its acceptance has not yet become popular in many countries, which can be a challenge for travelers. Fortunately, countries like Singapore, the UAE, and France are beginning to adopt UPI. And now, another country to join the UPI list is Qatar. NPCI International Payments Ltd (NIPL), in collaboration with Qatar National Bank (QNB), has launched a system that allows UPI payments via QR codes throughout the country.

NETSTARS’ payment solution has now been integrated into QNB’s point-of-sale systems. Qatar Duty Free is the inaugural merchant to utilize this service, allowing UPI payments at its locations and prominent tourist destinations. According to NPCI, this initiative will offer Indian visitors, who represent the second-largest group of international tourists in Qatar, a secure and efficient method for conducting transactions throughout the country.

This new initiative is not only convenient for Indian travelers but also beneficial for Qatar’s tourism-related industries. With a significant number of Indian tourists using UPI payment applications, businesses partnering with QNB can look forward to increased transaction volumes, growth opportunities, and the ability to attract more customers.

Yousef Mahmoud Al-Neama, the Group Chief Business Officer of QNB, described this achievement as a win for everyone involved: “It improves convenience for Indian travelers, encourages cashless payments, and enhances the connectivity of the payment system. Local businesses will flourish with these more accessible digital payment methods.”

When it comes to UPI, it is currently active in eight countries: Bhutan, France, Mauritius, Nepal, Singapore, Sri Lanka, the UAE, and Qatar.
