Tamil Nadu Gets Its First Biodiversity Heritage Site

In the Arittapatti and Meenakshipuram villages of Tamil Nadu’s Madurai district, an area that sprawls a total of 193.215 hectares was announced as a Biodiversity Heritage Site (BHS) by the state government in 2024. Did you know about that?

Under the Biological Diversity Act of 2022, these two villages in Tamil Nadu were notified as BHS. One of the most notable features of Arittapatti village is its seven barren granite hillocks. Overall 72 lakes, 200 natural springs, and 3 check dams are supported by this rocky landscape. 

Apart from the above-mentioned landscape, Arittapatti village is also home to several other megalithic structures. There are temples located in this village which are believed to be around 2,220 years old!

Many Tamil-Brahmi inscriptions and a rich biodiversity of flora and fauna are also found here. When it comes to bird species, this area has around 250 varieties of birds. Laggar falcon, shaheen falcon, and bonelli’s eagle are the three flagship raptor species that are found in Arittapatti village. Many other endangered animal species like Indian pangolin, python, and slender loris are also found here.
