Munnar Grama Panchayat To Introduce Tourist Entry Fee
The hill station of Munnar is known for its misty hills, luscious tea gardens, and cool weather. It is one of South India’s top hill stations, with tourists flocking here in large numbers to escape the heat.
As the hill station receives a large number of tourists, managing waste and controlling traffic is becoming increasingly challenging with each passing day. Now, the Munnar Grama Panchayat has decided to tackle this issue by introducing a tourist entry fee.
The authorities are set to introduce this tourist entry fee starting August 2026. This move is being aimed at making the hill station a cleaner and more eco-friendly place. Starting in August, tourists entering Munnar may have to pay an entry fee at three green check posts.
This proposal was discussed during a panchayat governing committee meeting held recently on Wednesday, May 13, 2026. As part of the plan, the panchayat plans to introduce three ‘green check posts’ at different entry points to regulate tourist movement and improve waste management in the area.

Proposed Check Posts & Traffic Restrictions
Tourists coming from the Adimali side are expected to enter through a proposed check post at Old Munnar Head Works. Tourists travelling from the Marayoor side will pass through Chattamunnar, while visitors arriving via Chinnakanal may have to cross check posts planned at Signal Point or the Toll Gate area.
The Panchayat President S Vijayakumar said that residents traveling for non-tourism purposes will not be charged. Officials are working on a separate system to distinguish between tourists and non-tourists and said residents travelling for non-tourism purposes will not be charged. According to him, officials are working on a separate system to identify non-tourists before the project is rolled out.
Authorities say the money collected through the tourist entry fee will be used for waste collection, waste processing and sanitation work in Munnar. Tourists may also be required to pay separately for garbage collection bags. To ensure proper waste management, visitors will be encouraged to hand over segregated waste at the dedicated check posts.
Apart from this, heavy tourist vehicles may soon face restrictions in some popular spots around Munnar. These spots include Lakshmi Estate, Rajamala, Lakkam and Mattupetty among others.
Instead of allowing large tourist vehicle traffic in crowded areas, local taxi services arranged by the Munnar and Devikulam panchayats may be provided for visitors. All these arrangements are being planned to be implemented before the Onam season.
